🎨 ART THERAPY ON THE STREETS! 🎨

We’re bringing creativity, connection & community to this year’s Barton Annual Street Hang!

Join us for outdoor art making, a collaborative community canvas, a special Queerly Yours printmaking scavenger hunt and a chance to meet our art therapists and learn more about what art therapy is all about.

Whether you’re a lifelong artist, a curious doodler, or just looking for something fun to do, we’d love to create with you.

In art therapy, you don’t need clarity, words or readiness.

You just start where you are, and the process adapts with you.

Sometimes that’s colour and movement.
Sometimes it’s something simple. Sometimes it doesn’t really make sense yet.

Nothing you make is wrong—it’s just information about where you are.

I’ve been feeling lots of big feels these past few weeks as our space continues to grow and expand!

There’s something really special about watching this little studio evolve into a space that can hold so many different humans, stories, emotions, new beginnings, workshops, conversations, big messes, quiet moments & community.

We care so deeply about creating a space that feels welcoming, safe, warm, creative, and human. We hope you can feel that care in all of the little details.

We can’t wait to make art with you! ✨

On my way to tell my teachers that the doodling in the margins was me trying to pay attention 😌
(especially in math class)

In school, doodling got labeled as distraction.

Like it meant we weren’t listening.
But for some of us, it was the thing keeping us with what was being said.

A way to stay anchored instead of drifting.

Our brains aren’t built for long stretches of stillness and passive listening.

Sometimes they need a little movement to stay online.

One study found people remembered about 29% more while doodling during a boring task (Andrade, 2009).

And… this shows up in art therapy too.

We’ll often make art while talking.

Not to avoid what’s coming up, but to stay grounded, focused, and present in the room and in our bodies.

Did you doodle in class too or get told to stop? 📝

This is a question I get a lot—what actually happens in an art therapy session?

There isn’t one way!

I wanted to share this to gently demystify art therapy a bit and give you a sense of how art and materials can show up in sessions.

Art is a tool we use when it’s helpful
and some sessions don’t use it at all
We follow what you need, and the session shifts from there

The second half of the school year can be harder than it looks.

Friendships change, expectations increase and school demands build. Many kids feel this shift but don’t always have the words for it!

Art therapy offers a supportive space to express and work through what’s going on, without needing to talk it all out.

Laken works with children + youth (6+) and is currently welcoming new clients!

Sessions are offered both in studio and virtually.

Creating art has been a core part of the human experience for tens of thousands of years.

Long before words could capture what we feel, humans made marks, images, and symbols to process experience, share meaning & care for themselves.

Art therapy taps into that same ancient, embodied way of understanding ourselves. It gives emotions, memories, and inner experiences a form to live in, so you can explore, reflect, and relate to them in a way talking alone often can’t.

It’s not about being “good at art.” It’s about giving your inner world a language it already knows how to speak.

Curious to experience it for yourself?
