🍋😎 What Colour Sunglasses Are You Wearing?

The way we see the world can shift depending on the “lenses” we’re wearing, especially for kids and preteens learning to understand big feelings like anxiety and depression.

🖤 Black lenses can make everything feel heavier and more hopeless.
❤️ Red lenses can keep the brain on high alert, scanning for danger and worry.
🤍 Clear lenses help us notice both challenges and strengths with more balance and perspective.

These lenses are often shaped by our experiences, and learning to notice them is the first step toward understanding our emotions in a new way.
With awareness and support, kids and preteens can learn to recognize their lenses, name what’s happening, and gently shift how they see themselves and the world. 💛

💭 What colour are your sunglasses today?

When my son Nico was a baby, he grunted constantly. Every nap, every night, every feeding seemed accompanied by sounds that made me wonder if something was wrong.

We brought our concerns to multiple healthcare providers and were repeatedly told that it was normal, that he was fine, or that we were worrying too much. While these responses may have been well-intentioned, they left us feeling unheard and questioning our instincts.
Eventually, one physician took the time to listen. Nico was diagnosed with silent reflux and a milk intolerance—conditions that explained many of the symptoms we had been concerned about all along.

Nico is doing well today, and for that we are incredibly grateful. But the experience highlighted how difficult it can be when concerns are minimized or dismissed.

Many individuals living with chronic or complex health conditions don’t have the privilege of moving on from these experiences. They must continue navigating healthcare systems while advocating to be heard and taken seriously.

Validation doesn’t require having all the answers. Sometimes it starts with simply listening.

Emotional intelligence helps children understand their feelings, build healthy relationships, and navigate challenges with greater confidence and self-awareness. 🌿

When children feel supported in expressing emotions safely, they develop skills that can impact communication, empathy, resilience, and emotional regulation for years to come.

HALTS isn’t about dismissing emotions or “fixing” them.

It’s about slowing down long enough to notice what your mind and body may be needing. 🍋✨

Small check-ins can create more space for self-compassion, regulation, and support.

Childhood is built through exploration, repetition, curiosity, and play.

When children are allowed safe opportunities to try things for themselves, they naturally develop problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, confidence, and a stronger sense of identity.

It’s not about removing guidance, it’s about recognizing when support is needed and when learning is happening through experience.

Safe space + appropriate boundaries = meaningful growth 🤍

Bedtime routines are more than habits, they’re regulation tools for a child’s nervous system 🌙

After a full day of movement, stimulation, learning, and emotional processing, many children need intentional support transitioning into rest. Predictable calming routines help the brain and body recognize that the day is slowing down.

Simple, low-stimulation activities before bed can support emotional settling, decrease activation, and create a greater sense of safety and predictability at night.

Over time, these repeated cues help strengthen the body’s natural sleep rhythm and can make bedtime feel less activating for both children and caregivers.

Small, consistent moments of calm often have the biggest impact 🌿

Mother’s Day can hold many emotions at once. 🤍
Today, we honour and hold space for:
• mothers
• grieving mothers
• those longing to become mothers
• those navigating infertility or pregnancy loss
• single mothers
• adoptive, foster, and stepmothers
• mothers carrying invisible struggles
• those missing their mothers today

Love, grief, joy, hope, and longing can all exist together. Whatever today feels like for you, your experience matters.

Sending gentleness to every heart this Mother’s Day. 🌷

Mother’s Day can hold a wide range of emotions, and for some, it includes the experience of secondary infertility, which is the difficulty of conceiving or carrying another pregnancy after already having a child.

This can be an especially painful and confusing experience, because it often exists alongside gratitude for the child you already have, while also carrying grief for what hasn’t happened yet.

On a day that is widely focused on celebrating motherhood in one way, many people are quietly holding more complex emotions beneath the surface.

Whatever you’re feeling today is valid. There is no “right” way to experience this day, and you don’t have to hold it alone. 💛

Working with suicidal clients in private practice can feel overwhelming, especially as a solo clinician or contractor. Without a team nearby, it can be hard to know what to do, how to document, or when to reach out for support.

“Working With Suicidal Clients in Private Practice” is a private practice clinician-focused training centered on risk assessment, safety planning, ongoing monitoring, and treatment planning, a space to explore these processes and feel more supported when working with this population.

Your nervous system isn’t working against you, it’s working for you.

Sometimes it just gets stuck in protection mode a little longer than we’d like.

Learning how your body responds to stress can be the first step toward feeling more grounded, more in control, and more like yourself again. 🌿
