1️⃣ Each work morning must start with coffee and hilarious reels. If you don’t know me, I love to laugh! I will come in a bit early before my first session to start on a good note. ☕️😂
2️⃣ Grounding and orienting throughout the day, every day. 🌱👁️ Sensory tools and grounding practices are just as much for me as they are for clients. If you see me shaking it out or doing some sort of weird stretch or self-holding, just carry on.
3️⃣ No late evenings or weekend appointments. 🙅🏻‍♀️ I curate a schedule I won’t be resentful of, so I can put the most energy into client care that I can. I love my family and want to ensure I miss as little precious time with my children as possible while also having a fulfilling and thriving career.
4️⃣ I complete my notes same day always! 👩‍🏫 This practice doesn’t just satisfy the organizer part of me, it always provides a structured container to reflect on sessions and a ritual to move on from work to personal life. Containment is super important for therapists and is not just for clients/people actively in trauma therapy!
5️⃣ No overhead fluorescent lights EVER.💡I love a dim light set up to help settle both mine and my clients’ nervous systems. This is an every therapist thing I’m pretty sure.
6️⃣ If I get to the point of not liking going to work, something must change.‼️Mitigating burnout requires ongoing self awareness and engaging in the act of “noticing” diligently. I listen to my body and all parts of me and take them seriously.
7️⃣ Lots of joy and fun in my life is a rule, not an exception. No martyrdom allowed.🚫 With such awareness of the brutal things people live through, I have to pay special attention to the duality that exists in life and remind myself why working on the tough stuff/helping others to work on the tough stuff is worth it: Because life is meant to be enjoyed and lived fully. I prioritize experiences with my family, engage in hobbies I love and have a lot of great friends that I love to lean on and laugh with. ✨

What is orienting? ✨🧠

Orienting is looking to our outward environment and using our senses to orient to time and place. This signals safety to our nervous system. Slow observation and noticing can turn off the brain’s alarm system. It’s no surprise that the beach can be so regulating for so many ☀️🌊

Where are all these single incident trauma clients anyway? If your practice looks anything like mine, you are working with complexity most of the time. It can be discouraging to be told that the modality you’ve invested in was originally for a different presentation entirely. The good news is that EMDR continues to be a transformative model for clients with attachment and complex trauma. EMDR consultation is a place to review cases, learn appropriate adaptations to standard protocol and come into your own as a trauma therapist. I am currently accepting new EMDR consultees for September. Reach out today. Link in bio ✨

My perspective is forever changed for the good. That sometimes means making sense of things feels messy, complicated or much more nuanced but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Being a trauma therapist has allowed me to understand, have the honour of witnessing transformation while also holding on to hope for a brighter world.

Relational trauma and outsourcing safety 👯‍♀️✨

Attachment and relational wounds can cause our brains to seek the “okayness” in others in order to feel okay ourselves. Instead of noticing what we feel, think or need, we anticipate and become keenly aware of these aspects in others. Being able to read the room can be both a gift and a burden. It allows us to attune to others but can lead to enmeshment and preoccupation in meeting other people’s needs while keeping ours as a distance.

The act of “noticing” is something that can be developed over time and is a core component of EMDR therapy where awareness of body sensations, emotions, thoughts, urges and memories can become intentional and ongoing. EMDR and other trauma therapies, with appropriate adaptations, can help to heal the wounds of relational trauma that keep your stuck in present day and help you see yourself as the main character in your own story again.

1️⃣ Everyone will experience trauma. Trauma, in the way I conceptualize it, meaning an injury to the nervous system. Something that overwhelmed coping and remained stuck. We will all experience trauma in this way.

2️⃣ Trauma is more than a PTSD diagnosis. From a therapist and clinical social work lens, I categorize trauma as being so much more than what would meet eligibility for a PTSD diagnosis. Majority of what I work with is actually based more in attachment and relationships than it is in a single incident shock trauma. Trauma can also exist collectively.

3️⃣ Trauma is at the root of many mental health diagnoses. Although people meet criteria and can be diagnosed with things such as depression and anxiety, this doesn’t mean they do not have a root memory or memories tied to this learning in their psychology.

4️⃣ Our bodies and brains are wise. If we consider that our brains and bodies are trying to survive and protect us, a lot of “maladaptive” coping makes a whole lot of sense. I often ask, how did [insert symptom or behaviour] help you at that time?

5️⃣ Thinking about doing trauma work is scarier than trauma work. Avoidance is a main symptom of trauma and it makes sense. Why wouldn’t our systems want to protect us from pain? However, it is important to ground in the fact that clients have already lived and survived it. Normally, clients who are ready for reprocessing, find the experience to be not “as bad” as they expected. The anticipation and continued avoidance can be the most anxiety provoking part.

6️⃣ Trauma work has no timeline. We work at the speed of trust and more particularly, the speed of your system’s ability to trust. Each client has a unique journey. Forcing reprocessing before someone is ready is counterproductive.

7️⃣ Trauma therapy is so much more than “desensitization” of the trauma memory. It is a highly relational process that helps the client learn how to experience feelings and memories from a more grounded place while making new meanings not just about what happened but about themselves, others and life in general.

Hi there! Looks like you found me 👋

Therapists tend to have their own reasons for wanting to help. Behind the scenes of any good therapist is a personal journey that has led them to where they are today. Good consultation and supervision not only reviews cases but also looks at (and normalizes) parts coming up for the therapist and how to work with our own works so we have good clinical outcomes while also mitigating burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.
