I’ve noticed there can be an automatic assumption among therapists that because we intend to create a safe space, we are one.

Good intentions are beautiful, but safety requires a container with:

clear agreements
thoughtful questions
the capacity to read beyond words
the ability to stay present with emotion, silence, resistance, and uncertainty, and
the ability to notice when something in the room needs our attention
and awareness of power and privilege in the room.

Being warm and good with people isn’t enough. Being educated isn’t enough.

And I say this with all the gentleness in the world: safety isn’t ours to declare as therapists. It’s something our clients experience.

There’s a pretty good chance you’re new here.

Over the past month, a big bunch of you have wandered into this little corner of the internet, so it felt like the right time for a proper reintroduction.

We’re a small team of therapists with different specialties, but one shared philosophy: healing happens in relationship. And if you’ve been here for more than five minutes, you’ve probably figured out that we don’t always sound like the typical therapists on Insta.

That’s intentional.

We love what we do. We have the privilege of sitting with people in some of the hardest moments of their lives. And we’re constantly discovering ourselves alongside our clients. Therapy doesn’t stop being transformative just because we happen to be the ones sitting in the therapist’s chair.

We’re curious. Sometimes skeptical. We ask a lot of questions - including about our own profession.

The field of mental health is changing. The world is changing. New ideas emerge. Old assumptions deserve to be challenged. We make room for neuroscience and nervous systems, meaning and spirituality, evidence and the occasional bit of woo.

At the heart of it, we’d rather help you become fully alive than endlessly self-controlled.

Because healing isn’t about becoming easier for everyone else. It’s about coming home to yourself.

So if this little corner of the internet feels a bit different, that’s because we’re trying to build the kind of therapy we’d want to find ourselves: thoughtful, deeply human, occasionally a little punk, and always rooted in genuine relationship.

Stick around. Browse the posts. Meet the team. And if you find yourself thinking, “These are my people,” we’d love to help you get a little closer to the version of yourself that’s been there all along.

Ruptures in therapy are inevitable. Last week I lived one.

My therapist did a new training. And in that moment, she reached for the technique instead of staying with me through something painful. I trusted her, and what I got back was an intervention.

Here’s the thing nobody says out loud enough: misattunement doesn’t stay in childhood. It doesn’t politely wait there. It shows up in your marriage, your friendships, your boss’s tone in a Slack message. And yes - it shows up in the therapy room, with the person you pay to get this right.

For some clients, that room is the first place a rupture has ever actually gotten repaired. Not avoided or smoothed over. Repaired. That’s not a small thing. That might be the whole thing.

I don’t think my job right now is to decide if she’s a good therapist. I already know she is.

My job is to bring the pi**ed off part, the disappointed part, and the part that wanted to quietly disappear back into the room, and find out if we can find each other again.

That’s the work.

For me, healing hasn’t been about becoming a different person.

It’s been about meeting myself differently.

Learning to recognize the wounded little girl inside - not fix her, just see her. Noticing when something outside activates her, and my protections rush in to keep her safe the only way they know how.

Healing has meant learning to show up for her the way she needed all along.

This is the work I do with clients too. Slowly building awareness of the wounds and protections, learning to witness them instead of being run over by them, until compassion makes room for a different choice.

All parts welcome. Even - especially - the young ones.

Sometimes the most important things I think in session are the ones trauma makes hardest to believe.
