It’s the simple things.

Small moments of joy, like the cutest cartoon animal sticker, can sometimes be all we need to make the day a little easier.
ca I think you said you liked the hedgehog? 🦔 someone may have found a good hiding place in the office to ensure you got to take him home. 💙

2 weeks ago Marcia told me a story about shooting the crocodiles closest to the boat.

“The expression draws from a practical survival analogy: if you were in a boat surrounded by alligators, you wouldn’t waste time planning for the future; you would focus on fending off the one closest to snapping at you.”

Unfortunately many of our lives mirror a sea of crocodiles and the reality is we do need to focus on the closest crocodile at times. This doesn’t mean we don’t ever look at the bigger picture, it just means that knowing when it’s time to focus on the biggest target is critical.

couldn’t remember where she heard this and after some digging it doesn’t seem super clear. What I will say is, having this brilliant lady use this analogy to help discuss the seriousness of our work was a great way to start the week.

We’re thinking of you way beyond the 60 minutes in our office.

If I know one thing for sure, it’s that I’ve found my match when it comes to the women I work with. The commitment and care of these women is something I have to nurture to ensure they know how special it is. .msw and are just two of the team members who are constantly reaching for more when it comes to client care.

Clients please know we’re thinking of you;
-While we grab a tea in the morning.
-When we sign up for the extra training.
-When we post a question in a team chat.
-When we schedule our weeks.
-When we add another book to our reading list.
-When we remember the date of something important in your life.
-When we know there’s an important conversation you’re going to have.
-When we talk to your doctors, dieticians and other professionals between sessions.

…..and many more times.

If you’re in these ladies care, you’re incredibly lucky.

Today is world eating disorder action day and boy do I have a lot of things I would like to call to action 😬 I will keep this short.

Eating disorders thrive in isolation and are far more pervasive than most people think. On the surface, it may look like a stage or an illness solely defined by distress related to food and shape. However, these illnesses are complex, and under the surface, you will find layers of protection that may look like anxiety, depression, fear, sadness, loneliness, neglect, isolation, panic, trauma, and deep pain that make up the roots of these horrible illnesses. These layers (or roots) are protective and serve a purpose of survival. Our job in recovery is to help you feel okay enough to heal from the disorder that has felt like a shield protecting you. Recovery is so hard because it takes a long time to trust that it’s okay to do that.

For those of you in recovery, you’re incredible keep fighting it gets better.

For those in the field, keep going. Working with individuals touched by eating disorders exposes you to some of the darkest pain and the most beautiful healing.

For those in advocacy, include all voices. Not everyone has the capacity to devote to make their voices heard through volunteering, research, canvassing, funding etc. It doesn’t mean their voices don’t matter. We need to work together as professionals in this field. In a healthcare system that doesn’t support the care we’re providing, private clinicians need to lean on each other and support each other in an effort to truly make a difference. ✌🏼💙

Recovery and the path to get there is complex and deeply personal. No two people will follow the exact same path to get to a better place. Our goal is to help make each step you take a bit less painful to ensure we are creating a path that seems sturdy enough to trust.

I know therapy is still misunderstood, the reason people come and the ways it helps is still hard to explain to people who haven’t been in the room.

Reading this list reminds me of all the beautiful subtle (and not so subtle) shifts that are so beautiful to watch unfold.

Thank you to everyone who walked through our doors this week or logged on to their computers. Take a moment and see whether you can see the shift in any of the above. ✌🏼

Happy Friday. 💙

I know therapy is still misunderstood, there are lots of misconceptions about why we do this work and why people come to do this work.

We are still wired to feel like we need to have everything figured out on our own.

This list is inspiring to consider and even more beautiful to watch unfold. 💙

Happy Friday everyone.

“Trauma fragments the self. The task of therapy is integration.” Janina Fisher

Marcia inspired me to do my EMDR training after years of saying I can’t. Sasha has worked with individuals who have faced various levels of trauma for almost 2 decades. The two of them create a dynamic in the therapy space that aims to help clients stay present long enough to feel safe with another human being.

Trauma therapy is not forcing open painful memories, that should never ever be the goal or expectation. It’s about carefully building enough safety that the nervous system no longer has to live in constant protection.

Marcia Nazartchyk and Sasha Pivarnyik are two highly skilled therapists on our team. They provide psychotherapy to clients with various presentations from depression to postpartum support. I’m grateful each day I get to learn from both of them.

(This photo is from over 2 years ago when Marcia was just about ready to have her second baby💙)
