🚫 MYTH: “Essential oils aren’t regulated, so they must be safe and natural.”
Honestly? It’s kind of the opposite. 👀

The fact that the essential oil industry is largely unregulated means:
❌ There’s no mandatory testing before a product hits the market
❌ Adulteration (adding synthetics or cheaper oils) is common and hard to catch without third-party testing
❌ Labels can mislead without legal consequence
❌ “Therapeutic grade” means whatever the company wants it to mean
Lack of regulation doesn’t protect you. It puts the responsibility on YOU to be informed.

That’s why professional aromatherapy education exists. A certified clinical aromatherapist learns how to evaluate oil quality, read third-party testing, spot contraindications, and make evidence-informed decisions, independent of the marketing.

Knowledge is your consumer protection. 🌿

This is one of the big reasons we built Essentria. Everyone deserves access to accurate, science-backed education, not just the people who can afford a pricey in-person course.

Ever bought an oil and wondered if it was actually pure? Let’s talk below. 💬

The Great Eucalyptus & Peppermint Debate with Kids 🤔

When it comes to Eucalyptus and Peppermint, safety matters—especially with children! These recommendations are based on clinical safety studies 😉, and as aromatherapists, our goal is always to help, not harm.

🔹 Why be cautious?
Some essential oils, including Eucalyptus (1,8-cineole) and Peppermint (menthol), can pose respiratory and neurological risks for young children.

🔹 Keeping risk low ⬇️ = Long-term safe use!
By using essential oils safely and appropriately, we ensure we can enjoy their benefits for years to come.

💡 Start low—there’s never a need to begin at the high end of a dilution chart. And remember, those tiny humans grow fast, and so do their essential oil options! But for now, let’s keep them safe 😁.

Sometimes Age Matters 🤷‍♀️

👶 Infants and 👵 the elderly have thinner skin, meaning they need less essential oil to achieve similar benefits. Plus, tiny new humans are at a higher risk of sensitization, so extra care is essential.

Did you know? About 90% of a neat (undiluted) essential oil application evaporates—meaning you may only be absorbing 1/10th of what you’re using. That’s a lot of wasted oil 💧 and money 😳! Plus, neat use increases the risk of sensitization and skin irritation.

✨ Why dilute? ✨
When you mix essential oils with a carrier oil, your body absorbs 90% or more of the essential oil—maximizing benefits and minimizing risks 😊. Plus, the carrier oil brings its own therapeutic properties, making your blend even more intentional and effective.

💡 Start lower than you think!
Even if a chart suggests starting at 2%, you can begin at 0.5% or 1%—especially when considering age or specific concerns.

💧 Dilution Matters! 💧

Different applications require different dilutions for effective and safe essential oil use. The skin on your face 🧖‍♀️ is delicate and needs a lower concentration, while dermal wounds in less sensitive areas may benefit from a slightly higher dilution.

Proper dilution reduces the risk of sensitization 😉—which is crucial because we want to enjoy essential oils as a long-term health tool. Sensitization could mean losing the ability to use oils altogether 😯! Also, not all oils are safe for dermal use, and we cover which ones to avoid in our online certification courses 😊.

These dilution ranges serve as guidelines, but we always recommend starting at the lowest effective percentage. You might be surprised—pain relief can be achieved with just 1% dilution, and some issues need only 0.5%!

🔥 Myth Buster Alert! 🔥

Natural Doesn’t Always Mean Safe 😱

It’s a common misconception 🧐 that just because essential oils come from plants 🌿, they must be safe to use in any way. But that’s not true!

The safety of essential oils depends on many factors, including:
👶🧒 Age
🤒 Health conditions
💊 Medications & supplements
🎯 Purpose of use
💧 Dilution & application method

💡 That’s why dilution matters! 💡
To make things easier, we’ve created a dilution chart 👇 to help you get started with safe and effective essential oil use.

🌍 If you follow international aromatherapy standards, you may notice our chart is a little different. That’s because Canada 🇨🇦 has unique or***ce reducer standards compared to other countries.

How to Use This Chart:

💧 The drops represent essential oils.
🧴 The bottle size at the bottom tells you how much carrier oil to use.
🛡️ We always recommend starting as low as possible!

💬 Any questions? Let us know what you think of our chart! 🤩

🚫 MYTH: “Aromatherapists recommend taking oils internally, it’s the most effective way.”

This is our final myth, and one of the most important. 🌿

Most certified clinical aromatherapists, the ones trained to the standards recognized by bodies like the CFA and NAHA, do not recommend internal use of essential oils as standard practice.

Here’s why:
🔬 Internal use takes a real understanding of pharmacokinetics, how oils are absorbed, metabolized, and cleared by the body
⚠️ The risk of toxicity, drug interaction, and mucosal irritation is much higher internally

📋 Safe internal use falls under Aromatic Medicine, an advanced specialization that goes beyond standard aromatherapy training
The standard scope for a clinical aromatherapist is topical and aromatic use, which is highly effective, well-studied, and far safer when it’s done properly.
“When in doubt, leave it out” isn’t fear. It’s evidence-informed professional practice.

If someone without advanced aromatic medicine training has told you to ingest oils regularly, please do your research and check with your healthcare provider. 💙

Thank you for going on this myth-busting journey with us! Which myth surprised you most? Tell us below. 👇

🚫 MYTH: “You can apply essential oils directly to skin, neat is fine.”
This one makes us wince every time. 😬

We know it’s usually shared with the best intentions. But applying undiluted (neat) oils straight onto skin is one of the most common causes of reactions we see talked about in aromatherapy communities.

Here’s what can happen:
🔴 Chemical burns (yes, even from “gentle” oils like lavender)
🔴 Contact dermatitis
🔴 Sensitization, a lasting reaction where your body starts rejecting an oil it was once fine with
Once you’re sensitized to an oil, that reaction can be permanent. You may never be able to use that oil again.

The good news? Diluting in a carrier oil doesn’t reduce effectiveness. It actually helps your oils absorb more safely and efficiently. 🌿

Dilution isn’t a compromise. It’s professional aromatherapy practice.
We’ve got a free dilution guide on our website, grab it through the link in our bio. It’s one of the most important things you can download today. 📥
