Tomorrow is World Refugee Day.

Rebuilding a life in a new country takes enormous strength. But the journey of leaving behind a home, a community, and everything familiar can carry a weight that isn't always visible.

Research from shows that refugees are at a higher risk for mental health challenges than other immigrant groups, and that mental health tends to worsen the longer someone has been in Canada. This is often because of ongoing barriers like language, employment, discrimination, and separation from family.

Everyone deserves compassion, regardless of where they come from or how long they've been here.

May is Music Therapy Awareness Month. And if you've ever reached for a familiar song when life felt like too much, there's a reason for that. Music has real potential to help us find our footing again, but the research shows it works best when we use it with intention.

Aimee, one of our music psychotherapists, explores what that looks like and how to build a playlist that actually works for you in our latest Mental Health Matters article. Read the full article here: https://shalemnetwork.org/the-playlist-as-the-sound-of-self-care/

Mother’s Day can be a difficult day for many reasons. For some, it brings grief, distance, loss, or longing. For others, it can hold complicated or tender memories.

If today feels heavy, you are not alone. There is space for your experience, exactly as it is.

Here at Shalem, we hold space for the fullness of what this day can bring.

On May 5, we honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people. This day is about more than awareness. It is about truth, reflection, and action.

Indigenous women and girls continue to face disproportionate violence, rooted in systems that have not always protected them. Recognizing this day means acknowledging that reality and committing to change. Indigenous women are life-givers, leaders, and the heart of community. Their safety matters. Their voices matter.

We are grateful to know Grandmother's Voice and their work to amplify Indigenous voices and support safer, stronger communities. We are learning to listen more deeply and to support care that is grounded in respect, relationship, and Indigenous knowledge.

Today, we remember those who are missing and those whose lives were taken. We honour their families. And we commit to being part of a future where Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people are safe, seen, and supported.

We often think of loneliness as something emotional, but research shows it also affects our bodies, our stress levels, and our long-term health. But when we bond with other people and feel a sense of connection, our brain’s reward system gets activated. It can steady our nervous system, support our well-being, and remind us that we are not meant to carry life alone.

We see this every day. Healing happens in relationship. In spaces where you can be known, supported, and met with care over time.

If this resonates with you, support is here.
