Had to hop on this trend 😂 is there anything you think I missed

When we feel stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious, our breathing often changes without us realizing it. It may become faster, shallower, or even held altogether.

Mindful breathing is the practice of intentionally bringing attention to your breath. Not to control every inhale and exhale, but to notice it.

Research shows that slowing down and paying attention to the breath can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the part of the nervous system responsible for rest, digestion, and recovery. This can help reduce stress, improve focus, and support emotional regulation.

That doesn't mean mindful breathing will instantly make difficult emotions disappear. Rather, it can create a pause between what you're feeling and how you respond to it.

A simple place to start:
🌿 Notice your breath.
🌿 Feel the air moving in and out.
🌿 If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back.
🌿 Repeat as often as needed.

Mindful breathing isn't about emptying your mind or achieving perfect calm. It's about practicing awareness, one breath at a time.

Have you ever noticed how your breathing changes when you're stressed?

Some of the things you identify with most within yourself might not actually be personality traits.

Sometimes they're trauma responses that developed to help you survive.

Being "low maintenance" might be people pleasing.

Being "independent" might be a learned belief that relying on others isn't safe.

Being "a perfectionist" might be preventing the pain of not being “good enough”.

Being a “workaholic” might be distracting yourself so much that you don’t have the time to feel anything else.

And being "very rational" might be what happens when you suppress your emotions for so long.

Trauma responses are adaptations. They developed for a reason.

That doesn't mean they still serve you. But it does mean they deserve curiosity before criticism.

When we understand where these patterns come from, we can stop asking, "What's wrong with me?" and start asking, "What happened that made this make sense?"

Healing isn't about becoming a different person.
It's about recognizing which parts of you were built for survival and deciding which ones you want to carry forward.

Which trauma response have you spent the longest mistaking for a personality trait?

My dog has absolutely no qualifications in mental health.

He has never attended therapy, read a self-help book, listened to a podcast, or created a morning routine.

His credentials include:
✔️ Chasing squirrels
✔️ Barking at suspicious leaves
✔️ Napping professionally
✔️ Demanding snacks with unwavering confidence

And yet...

He might be onto something.

🐾 Go for a walk when you've been cooped up too long.
🐾 Make time for fun, even if it serves no productive purpose.
🐾 Rest when you're tired.
🐾 Speak up when you need something.
🐾 Let yourself be comforted.
🐾 Don't carry yesterday's stress into today's sunshine.

Sometimes mental health isn't about becoming a completely different person.

Sometimes it's about remembering the basics that help us feel human.

Now, if you'll excuse me, my furry life coach is reminding me that I've been sitting at my desk too long and that the outside world exists.

And honestly? He's probably right. 🐶

Sometimes overwhelm makes it feel like you are meant to brace yourself and survive every wave on your own.

But healing is not about becoming strong enough to never be affected.
It is about learning that you do not have to carry every wave alone.

You are not failing because it feels like a lot.
You are human, and sometimes the most grounded thing you can do is reach for support, soften your grip, and let yourself be met where you are.

Complex trauma is often misunderstood because it doesn't always stem from one specific event.

Instead, it can develop through repeated experiences that overwhelm our ability to cope, particularly when safety, consistency, or connection were missing.

The effects can show up in our relationships, emotions, self-worth, and nervous system long after the experiences themselves have ended.

What you're experiencing today may make more sense when viewed through the lens of what you've lived through.

Healing isn't about erasing the past. It's about understanding its impact and creating space for something different moving forward ☀️

Therapy isn’t just for processing pain — it’s also where people share what’s going right.

The growth. The wins. The shifts.

A reminder that healing is happening in both the big and small ways. ☀️

You don’t need to live someone else’s pain to feel the impact of it. Secondary trauma can settle quietly into the nervous system, showing up in ways that feel confusing or “out of character.” Your reactions make sense. Your capacity matters. Your wellbeing counts here.

It’s okay, even if it feels confusing, overwhelming, or unfamiliar right now.

Your body is allowed to catch up to what your mind already knows: you’re safe enough to take this step. ☀️

Developmental trauma isn’t always loud or obvious. Often, it’s the quiet, long-term impact of growing up without the safety, attunement, or consistency you needed.

It can shape how you see yourself, how you trust, how you cope, and how you move through the world — sometimes without you realizing it.

Healing is possible. With the right support, you can learn to feel safe in your body, rewrite old patterns, and build the kind of inner security you never had the chance to develop.

You’re not “too much.” You’re not “overreacting.” You’re responding to what you survived — and you deserve to heal 🌱
