💙OCD Awareness Week💙

OCD can significantly affect someone’s daily life. An OCD diagnosis means someone can spend at least one hour per day being consumed by obsessions and compulsions. But it’s not uncommon for these distressing thoughts to take up several hours per day.

🌀 OCD is often referred to as a “vicious” cycle because the obsessions and compulsions happen in a loop that can be extremely challenging to break. The longer someone remain in the cycle, the more momentum and strength it gains, making it even more difficult to escape. The OCD cycle is fueled by high levels of anxiety and fear, as well as an intense desire to reduce that fear.

One of the most effective and evidence supporting treatment of OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). In fact, the majority of people with OCD (about 7 out of 10) will benefit from medication or ERP.

Though it sounds counter-intuitive, the basis of ERP therapy is the practice of accepting thoughts and refrain from carrying out compulsions. If you’re able to “surrender” and accept the “worst case scenario,” it prompts your natural thoughts and feelings to come back. This trains your brain to recognize that your OCD isn’t so scary after all.

Our Child & Family Therapist Jaclyn is a CTSA-Certified Clinician in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD. She is also a professional member of the International OCD Foundation.

✨A beautiful discovery found today✨

“A wind phone is for anyone who has lost someone special in their life.

We hope you find comfort in expressing feelings, sharing memories, and saying the goodbyes you never had the opportunity to say.

As you talk to your loved one, let the wind carry your words over the trees, and into the beyond.

Grief is a natural response to loss and is unique to everyone. Give yourself permission to feel whatever you feel, without judgment.”

One of the biggest challenges of parenting can be remaining calm when are children are anything but calm. Through a mindful parenting approach, we understand that parenting begins with us. We understand that children model our behaviour and we play a pivotal role in helping children learn self regulation. If we can regulate our own emotions, we can give our children the calm, clean guidance they need in tough moments.

But....it can be hard. 🥴💨

That is why mantras like this can be a powerful parenting tool that can help us connect with our values, shift our perspective or re-frame our child’s behaviour. And if we can shift the way we see these tough moments, we can change the way we respond to it. Because the language we use – even if it’s not spoken aloud – matters. It colours our interactions with our children and our responses to them.

So next time you find yourself in a stressful situation with your child, allow yourself to pause, speak some of these mantras to yourself and respond to your child when you find your calm.
