Intrusive thoughts can feel incredibly personal, especially when the content is about something you care about. That can lead to a lot of checking around the thought itself. You might start asking whether you meant it, whether you felt scared enough, whether your body reacted, whether it felt too natural, or whether having the thought says something about you. The more attention you give those questions, the more there is to keep analyzing.
The reviewing, checking, and trying to get a clear answer can become the part that really keeps the loop going. It can help to recognize when your brain has moved from noticing a thought into trying to prove something about it.
