John Cross: Canadian Armed Forces Navy Veteran, a friend, and alumni of the Returning Warriors Ranch.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Cook from 1989 to 2020, completing over 30 years of dedicated military service. Throughout my career, I was entrusted with providing high-quality food services in a wide range of demanding environments, both ashore and at sea, supporting operational readiness and the well-being of personnel.
My postings included major Canadian Forces bases such as Gagetown, Esquimalt, Borden, Petawawa, and multiple returns to Esquimalt, reflecting both operational requirements and the trust placed in my experience. These postings exposed me to diverse working conditions, from field exercises to large-scale base operations.
In addition to shore duties, I served aboard several Royal Canadian Navy vessels, including HMCS Algonquin, HMCS Huron, HMCS Calgary, HMCS Vancouver, and HMCS Ottawa, with multiple deployments on HMCS Calgary. While deployed at sea, I worked in high-tempo, confined environments where I was responsible for meal planning, preparation, food safety, inventory management, and maintaining morale through consistent and reliable food service.
My role required long hours, physical endurance, and the ability to perform under pressure, often in challenging conditions such as rough seas, operational stress, and limited resources. I consistently upheld strict standards of hygiene, safety, and efficiency while supporting crew members during both routine operations and deployments.
Over the course of my career, I developed strong organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. I was responsible for coordinating with supply chains, managing food stocks, training junior personnel, and ensuring that all dietary and nutritional needs were met in accordance with military standards.
My service reflects a long-standing commitment to duty, adaptability, and professionalism, contributing to the effectiveness and morale of the units and ships I supported.
