Black Bear Sighting Alert (August 17, 2026)

To Our Community Members,
A black bear was recently seen crossing near the Gitanmaax Health and Wellness Centre.

At this time of year, bear activity increases, so sightings in and around the community may become more common. We ask everyone to be mindful when walking outdoors and to help reduce attractants by properly securing garbage, pet food, and other scented items.

If you encounter a bear:
• Stay calm and keep your distance.
• Do not approach the bear.
• Do not run.
• Back away slowly and give the bear space.
• Report sightings to community staff or security personnel.

To report an aggressive bear or injured wildlife, contact the Conservation Officer Service 24-Hour Hotline at 1-877-952-7277.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe and aware.
