High River District Health Care Foundation

High River District Health Care Foundation The mission of the Foundation is to provide our donors with a means of enhancing the quality of health care available in our community.

Foundation History

The High River District Health Care Foundation was established on March 25th, 1986 and obtained charitable registration on October 16th, 1986. For the first five years hospital staff ran the Foundation in addition to their regular departmental responsibilities. Our only fund raising activity was the annual Dinner and Auction, which continues to this day. The 2012 Dinner raised

over $56,000, and supported enhancements to Acute Care. The first direct mail campaign was held in November of 1992, a Donor recognition program put in place, and a Donor newsletter, Foundation Footnotes, was launched. It is still published bi-annually. The Foundation received its first bequest in 1989 which established a permanent endowment fund for the Foundation. Over the years the endowment fund has been added to and now stands at over $1 million. The intent of the endowment fund is to ensure the long term viability of the Foundation. In November 1991 the “Be Our Partner” campaign was launched and the beginnings of a formal Fund Development program was put in place. In April of 1992 a Fund Development Co-ordinator was hired by the Foundation on a contract basis. The following December the Foundation’s office was re-located within the Hospital and on April 1, 1994 the Board decided to make the Development Co-ordinator a permanent position within the Foundation. In 2009 the Board hired a full-time Executive Director. In 2013 the Foundation launched its most significant fund raising initiative to date, partnering with the Rotary Club High River to raise one milliion dollars to support the expansion and enhancement of the Community Cancer Centre at the High River Hospital. The Foundations main focus continus to be on the Hospital but expands to cover Alberta Health Service supported initiatives in High River and Nanton.

Sometimes, it's the little things that make the biggest difference. A thoughtfully prepared meal can bring comfort, brighten someone's day, and remind them they're surrounded by a caring community.

That’s the inspiration behind the Healing Plate Program. In partnership with the High River Hospital Nutrition team, the Foundation is proud to help bring moments of comfort and connection to patients and residents through elevated meals offered four times each year in the Hospital.

This special meal was made possible through the generous support of the Kinsman Club of High River & The Foothills Kinettes. Their commitment helps the High River nutrition and kitchen team turn a regular meal into a meaningful experience of comfort, care, and connection.

A special thank you also goes to Rob, Sara, Smit, Jody, Aaron, and the entire food services staff. The team served up delicious brisket, baked beans, dill potato salad, cornbread, peach pie, and ice cream. A perfect meal for a summer day!

From 2005 to 2009, the Foundation experienced remarkable growth while investing in major hospital renovations, emergency and obstetrical care, long-term care, and spiritual care services.

Partnerships with community events and organizations, such as the Longview 4H Beef Club, expanded. The Foundation reached multiple milestones, including celebrating the Foundation's 20th Anniversary, hiring the Foundation's first Executive Director (Michael Brown), and launching a new brand, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter!

💗 Community Event Highlight 💗

We’re incredibly grateful to C5 Rodeo and the High River Ag Society for including us at the Guy Weadick Rodeo on June 20 as part of the Tough Enough to Wear Pink event.

Our Foundation team, alongside an amazing group of volunteers and dedicated rodeo Queens and Princesses, sold tribute cards by donation in support of the High River Cancer Centre. We were also honoured to have members of the amazing Cancer Centre team join us and be recognized during a special ceremony.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteers, the rodeo Queens and Princesses, the High River Cancer Centre team, High River Ag Society, C5 Rodeo, and every person who stopped by to support local cancer care. Together, you're helping make a difference close to home. 💕

Happy Canada Day!

Today, we celebrate the people, communities, and connections that make this country home, while also recognizing the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for these lands for generations. As we celebrate, we reflect on our shared history and our ongoing responsibility to listen, learn, and support reconciliation.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Canada Day.

From 2000–2004, the Foundation invested in projects such as new blood and heart monitor machines, diagnostic imaging upgrades, surgical department enhancements, the launch of Nanton’s Telehealth program, and an accessible outdoor garden space for hospital residents and families. Bathing facilities on the hospital’s third floor were upgraded and palliative care suites were enhanced to provide a more home-like environment.

During this period, the Cattle & Grain Round Up surpassed $375,000 raised, demonstrating the incredible support of local agricultural partners and communities in keeping healthcare close to home.
