Sometimes we set the bar too low.

If you have any type of chronic health condition that you are always assuming is the cause of your fatigue, then we might want to look deeper. What if it’s only a small part of the problem? Or, what if it’s a problem that has a solution?

It is possible to have a chronic condition but still feel good. Don’t write yourself off!

I don’t love the term hormonal imbalance and this is why. First off, I know women are just looking for terms that help them describe what they are feeling, and that is often…hormonally unbalanced! But what women really need when it comes to their hormones is for the real problem to be identified and treated. PMS is a real condition with real treatments and it is actually the driving cause of many women’s hormonal concerns.

Did you know testing your hormones isn’t a useful way to figure out if you have PMS?

Your hormones might be perfectly normal (i.e not imbalanced) and you can still experience PMS or PMDD. Here’s why 👇

It’s not about how high your hormones are — it’s about how your body reacts to their fluctuations. Even normal hormonal shifts can trigger intense symptoms for some women.

Research shows there are even different sensitivity subtypes:
⚡ Sensitive to progesterone throughout the luteal phase
📉 Sensitive to estrogen dropping before your period
🥚 Sensitive to the estrogen peak at ovulation

It’s a sensitivity thing!

If you’re struggling to understand your hormones, let’s talk! Let’s figure out what the actual issue is so we can actually fix it.

Let’s be honest, the vast majority of my patients are women. And I know I talk a lot of hormones. But that doesn’t mean men aren’t a part of the convo.

I get asked all the time “can you see my husband” and the answer is a resounding YES!

First off, men’s hormones matter too. Average testosterone levels in men have significantly declined over the years and many men don’t realize how this is impacting their well-being.

In addition, gut health, mental health, sleep issues, metabolic and cardiovascular concerns are just a few examples where I often support male patients.

I’m a girls girl through and through but I promise I can hang with the guys too 😏✌️

Alriiiiight, what am I on about now??

I don’t just encourage my patients to move their bodies, I also ask them what their current barriers are.

“I can’t go long on walks anymore because my dog is old.”

“I don’t go to the gym because my dog gets upset when I leave the house without them.”

“I stopped doing “_____” after my dog passed away.”

Please don’t cringe if this has ever been you in my office, because don’t worry - I hear this ALLLL the time!! And I hear ya - you LOVE your dog! They have movement needs too. And, I especially have compassion for the last one - some healing time and space may be needed and I acknowledge that.

Exercise and movement are REALLY important if you want to move the needle in your health in a meaningful way - and sometimes that means evaluating your needs independent of your good boy (or girl)’s needs. I’d even sometimes be bold enough to ask, is the dog the real reason or are you using them as a way to stay in your comfort zone?

Take care of your doggos but don’t forget to also check in with YOUR needs. ✌️

I have a confession:

When I was a naturopathic student and early into my practice, I thought I had no interest in “women’s health”. I didn’t feel particularly passionate about menstrual health, perinatal health, or any of that stuff.

But you ladies changed me. The more of your stories I heard, the more inspired I felt. The more rage I felt. The more curious I became. And eventually it just became an obsession, to learn as much as I could to give you the answers you needed for your health because no one else was giving them to you.

It is a privilege that I get to meet women who walk all different life paths, and hear their stories, their wins, their pains, and their ambitions.

Women do and will continue the change the world in the most incredible way. My “why” is to help them feel good enough to do that. I’m thankful for all the incredible women in my life for being an inspiration to me and teaching me how amazing women are.

Happy International Women’s Day!
