I wrote this while creating an ADHD-friendly resource for organizing financial documents, and then realized it applies to… a lot.

There can be so much pressure to find the perfect system.

The perfect planner.
The perfect morning routine.
The perfect filing system.
The perfect app.
The perfect way to keep the house organized.

And sometimes we spend so much energy trying to create the perfect system that the system itself becomes another overwhelming project.

So I’m much more interested in:

Can you actually use it?

Can you find what you need?
Does it reduce the number of decisions you have to make?
Can you maintain it well enough?
Can you come back to it after inevitably abandoning it for a while?

It doesn’t have to be beautiful.

It doesn’t have to work 100% of the time.

It just has to make life a little easier for Future You.

One of the questions I come back to a lot in ADHD work is:

What is getting between intention and action?

Because “I’m not doing it” doesn’t necessarily tell us why.

You might genuinely want to do the thing.

But maybe you can’t figure out where to start.
Maybe there are too many steps.
Maybe you keep forgetting it exists.
Maybe it feels incredibly boring.
Maybe you’re overwhelmed before you even begin.
Maybe your brain is already at capacity.

Those are very different problems — and they probably need different solutions.

So before jumping to “I need to try harder,” I like to get a little more curious:

What part of doing this is actually hard?

That answer is often much more useful.

This can look like making your lunch the night before, or focusing on self-compassion for a day. Maybe planning a dinner date with a friend, or catching an early movie in bed for some extra rest. What might your future self thank you for doing this week?

Listening to our bodies is the first step. Being able to identify the feeling of overwhelm whether it's cognitive, sensory, physical or emotional is the first step. The next step is making room for that overwhelm. Identification and accommodation often comes before understanding. This is because we often don't have the capacity for insight while in a state of overwhelm.

In fact, it's said that prevention is the best intervention. Therapy is about more than responding to crises. It is a place to find support for everyday struggles, learn more about yourself, your patterns, and unpack anything you've been carrying in a safe space.
