October 4, 2023 marks TWO YEARS of Wild at Heart Occupational Therapy being a living and breathing business!

How is that even possible?!

I have so much to reflect on and to feel so incredibly grateful for.

Number 1 - I feel massive gratitude toward every single parent, grandparent, caregiver, auntie, uncle or sibling that has walked through my variety of doors to help support a young person in their life. You have put your trust into me and my child-led, play based approach to supporting your child’s development. Being a part of so many families’ lives fills my cup right to the top, every single day. I opened my business doors for you and I am so honoured to continue to hold that door open for anyone needing a helping hand.

Number 2 - Jumping into a private practice has proven to be a brave act for me! But I could not (and likely would not) have done it without the unwavering support I’ve received from my husband, my kids (even when they groan every time I buy a new toy “for my work” and not for them 🤣), from my extended family and my entrepreneur friends. I have leaned on a group of special OT/SLP/Psych colleagues to over-think, sometimes problem solve and celebrate all the ups and downs of being a therapist and a business owner all at the same time.

The community of Humboldt has helped to lift me up so I can continue to lift you up. Thank you for being with me for these last two years! I’m looking forward to putting up a few more anniversary markers in the future! 🤍🤍

Kristin Ochitwa of Holding Space Counselling & Therapies and I work in the same office building, share an office wall and many of the same values to serve our clients the best we can. We also apparently dress identically on occasion!! 😂 We call this the cozy, comfort work uniform that allows us to be ourselves while giving everything we've got to our clients.

This beautiful little Tuesday morning moment with Kristin inspired my first OT Month information post to help describe occupational therapy.

Occupational Therapy is "trans-disciplinary". WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! The term is overly-complex, the explanation is not.

In the most simple of words - it means that occupational therapists draw on knowledge and expertise from different disciplines to address the unique needs and challenges of individuals in a holistic manner.

OTs are well-informed health care professionals. We are educated to be this way. We explore all avenues of the human experience. This let's me get to know you while considering ALL of the parts of life that make you, YOU.

In trans-disciplinary occupational therapy, collaboration with other healthcare professionals is common. OTs often work alongside physicians, nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists, social workers, and educators, among others, to provide comprehensive care. This collaborative approach ensures that clients receive well-rounded support that addresses all aspects of their well-being.

Connecting with other clinicians (OTs and everyone else!) and integrating their knowledge and view point into my practice is one of my most favourite parts. Being "trans-disciplinary" makes me a versatile, responsive, client-centered and truly "holistic" clinician, and that is a hallmark of being a world class OT!

So now you know!

Erin and I share space, share ideas, and apparently share wardrobes and photo poses! 🤪 We LOVE working in the same office!
