Disability means that a person has to do something differently than most people do it. The way most people do things isn't best or "right" - it's just a numbers thing. Disability doesn't mean worse, less than, or "abnormal."

Disability is incredibly common, and disability is not a bad word. Disability is part of being human and is integral to the human experience.

🌱No, children don’t need to know the nitty gritty details of what you discuss in therapy. They don’t even need to know every time you have therapy scheduled, but…

🌱Knowing you attend therapy normalizes it for them, and...

🌱This needs to be coupled with general psychoeducation on what therapy is, and what it’s for.

🌱Here, we can dismantle the notion that those who attend therapy must be weak, or that they must be experiencing something terrible.

🌱While therapy often does support those experiencing, or who have experienced, adverse events, there has also been a cultural shift in therapy, where we know it’s a strength to be vulnerable, to seek support and expand our support network, to explore our patterns, to get it out and process, and to secure our ongoing human development and personal growth.

🌱Therapy also allows parents to be parents, and not therapists.

🌱Children need to know it’s okay to seek support. That seeking support is a human experience, and not a fatal flaw.

🌱Normalizing therapy for children deconstructs the idea that keeping things hush-hush is best, or the “what’s said at home, stays at home” concept that typically isolates us and promotes shame.

🌱Sure, there are some things that need to be kept private, but there is a difference between privacy and secrecy. Privacy promotes autonomy, trust, and protection. Secrecy is more about concealment. It avoids accountability, is fear-based, and ultimately leads to distrust, isolation, and shame.

🌱Note: Therapy can be diverse. It will look different for different people.
