🚗 A Great Time to Hit the Road... But What If Your Teen Doesn’t Want To?
Summer is often when many 16-year-olds begin learning to drive. But if your teen isn’t interested, they’re not alone.
🌿 There are many reasons a teen may delay getting their licence:
• 💰 The cost of lessons, insurance, fuel, and vehicles
• ⏰ Busy schedules filled with school, sports, and activities
• 😟 Anxiety or feeling overwhelmed behind the wheel
• 🚗 Easy access to rides from family, friends, or ride-sharing
• 📱 Staying socially connected online instead of travelling to meet up
• 👥 Friends who also aren’t rushing to get their licence
As parents, it can be frustrating or confusing. Instead of pushing, try getting curious.
💬 Ask:
• “What worries you about driving?”
• “What would help you feel more prepared?”
• “Is this something you’d like to work toward in the future?”
For some teens, delaying is about confidence....not capability. With patience, support, and gradual exposure, many become ready when the time feels right.
Every teen develops at their own pace, and that’s okay.
