💚 Wellness Wednesday: Good Friends Are Good Medicine

Friendship isn’t just good for your mood—it may also be one of the most powerful habits for your long-term health.

Research has consistently shown that people with strong social connections tend to live longer and enjoy better physical and mental health. Spending time with family, friends, or your community has been linked to:

✅ Lower stress levels
✅ Better heart health
✅ Stronger immune function
✅ Reduced risk of anxiety and depression
✅ Improved longevity

One landmark review of 148 studies involving more than 300,000 people found that individuals with stronger social relationships had a 50% greater likelihood of survival than those with weaker social connections.

* Holt-Lunstad J, Smith TB, Layton JB. Social Relationships and Mortality Risk: A Meta-analytic Review. PLoS Medicine. 2010;7(7):e1000316. (148 studies; 308,849 participants; stronger social relationships associated with a 50% increased likelihood of survival.

Whether it’s meeting a friend for coffee, joining a walking group, calling a family member, or simply sharing a laugh with someone, those moments can have lasting benefits for both your body and your mind.

This Wellness Wednesday, challenge yourself to reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Your health—and theirs—may benefit.

Tip Tuesday: Stretch Your Levator Scapulae

If you spend hours at a desk, this small muscle can become tight and contribute to stiffness where your neck meets your shoulder.

What is the levator scapulae?
Its name literally means “the muscle that lifts the shoulder blade.” It runs from the upper neck to the top of the shoulder blade and helps elevate and rotate the scapula.

Try this seated stretch:
✅ Sit up tall.
✅ Hold onto the edge of your chair with one hand.
✅ Turn your nose about 45° away from the side you’re stretching.
✅ Gently look down toward your armpit.
✅ Use your opposite hand to apply a light stretch.
✅ Hold for 20–30 seconds and repeat 2–3 times per side.

A few minutes of stretching during your workday can help reduce muscle tension and keep you moving comfortably.

🌿 MINDFUL MONDAY 🌿

A new week is here—and you don’t have to do everything at once.

Take a moment today to ask yourself:

What’s ONE thing you can do this week that will help you be at your best?

Maybe it’s taking a walk.
Maybe it’s getting a little more sleep.
Maybe it’s getting adjusted.
Maybe it’s taking a few minutes to slow down and breathe.
Maybe it’s simply making time for something you enjoy.

👇 Tell us in the comments: What’s your ONE thing this week?

Let’s start the week with a little more intention. 💚

🏋️Want to get stronger? Your body needs a reason to adapt!

Wellness Wednesday: The Overload Principle!

The overload principle is a key concept in resistance training. It means gradually challenging your muscles with more work than they are accustomed to—such as increasing the weight, repetitions, sets, or difficulty of an exercise.

But here’s the part that’s easy to overlook: the workout is the stimulus, but recovery is when your body adapts.

After a challenging resistance-training session, your muscles and nervous system need time to recover and rebuild. Without adequate recovery, continually adding more training can lead to excessive fatigue, reduced performance, and a greater risk of injury.

💪 Train hard. Progress gradually. Recover fully.

For many people, allowing at least one recovery day between challenging sessions for the same muscle groups is a good starting point. Your ideal recovery time will depend on your training intensity, fitness level, age, sleep, nutrition, and overall health.

If you have any questions, let us know. Dr. Mark graduated with a 4-year degree in Human Kinetics prior to chiropractic college and is happy to discuss your training plan.
