I’m pretty good at tuning out headlines, articles, and the news. Protecting my own mental health on social media is important. But I can’t ignore this one anymore, and I don’t want to.
If you know me, have taken a class with me, or worked with me, you know - or at least I hope you do - that none of my postpartum journeys were easy.
They were hard. Scary. Isolating.
With my first and second babies, I didn’t know there was a name for what I was experiencing. I didn’t have a plan. I didn’t talk about it. I suffered in silence.
With my third baby, I was determined to do things differently. I had a village. I had conversations. I knew the words for what I was experiencing. I had a plan.
And I still suffered. I reached out for help. I was still failed by our system.
I’m privileged enough to have made it to the other side - and to have turned the hardest seasons of my life into a career dedicated to helping others through theirs.
Now, in my job, I’ve taken perinatal mental health training, I’ve sent resources. I’ve answered 3 a.m. calls from people desperate for help. I’ve witnessed the gaps. I’ve witnessed a system that is broken in ways that leave people hurting when they are already at their most vulnerable… and I still don’t have many solutions, but I know what it feels like to experience the heartache of a broken system.
And I will never stop talking about it.
Getting the help you need should never be the hardest part.
