A little preparation can help make Halloween feel more comfortable and enjoyable. Here are some ideas to try:

Before you go: Communicate what to expect, use visuals or a social story, choose a sensory-friendly costume, and practise wearing it ahead of time.

While you’re out: Bring headphones or a familiar item, plan a flexible route, decide how your child can communicate, and consider starting early. A recent photo, tracking device, glow sticks, or bright accessories can also support safety and visibility.

Plans can change. Skip houses that feel overwhelming, take a break, or choose another activity. Halloween doesn’t have to be all or nothing—handing out candy can be a fun option, too. 🎃

Every child experiences sensory input differently. Movement breaks, a quieter space, visual supports, or a favourite fidget may help a child feel more comfortable and ready to take part. The best support starts with noticing the child’s cues and working together to find what works for them. 💜
