Often it isn't what you did today.

Tissue can adapt on a delay. The week you added an extra session, or came back after a layoff, or changed the shoes - that week often feels fine. The bill can arrive later.

Which is why "I didn't do anything different" is usually true, and often the wrong window to be looking at anyway.

Have a think about a few weeks back.

"I believe you. I know that your pain is real."

A lot of people arrive at a first appointment already braced for an argument. They've got the list ready - everything they've tried, how long it's been going on, the tests that came back normal. Some explain that they have a high pain tolerance, as if that's something they need to establish before anyone will take them seriously.

That bracing is understandable. Pain is invisible - there's nothing to point at - and something that's been going on a while has usually been explained a dozen times over already. To family. At work. To yourself at three in the morning.

None of it is necessary here. What you're experiencing is where the assessment starts, not something to get past before the real work begins.

Dr. Morgan Quick, on why none of that bracing should be necessary. Smiths Falls.

Your kid plays. Your kid's hurt. Can they come here?

Yes - and it's the same conversation as yours.

A fifteen-year-old whose shoulder has been bothering them since tryouts gets the same assessment an adult does. What happened, what makes it worse, what they need that shoulder to do on Saturday. Then an explanation in plain language, with you in the room.

What's different is that they're still growing. Tissue tolerance changes faster at fifteen than at forty, which is why a kid who was fine in September can stop being fine by November without anything obvious happening in between. And they'll usually under-report it, because coming off is worse than being sore.

If it's sport, bring them in. If it turns out to be something else, we'll say so - and that usually means pointing you to Dr. Natalie Bernicky at Ease Family Chiropractic.

Does it hurt?

The needles are about the width of a hair - nothing like the ones used for injections or blood draws, which are hollow and much thicker. Many people are surprised at how gentle it feels.

What people do tend to notice is a dull heaviness or warmth around the needle once it's in. That's a normal sensation and not the same thing as pain.

You are in charge of the whole thing. If something doesn't feel right, say so and it stops.

Acupuncture, the activator, soft tissue work. Different tools, and which one you get is a conversation rather than a default.

The 48 hours after a hard session.

Sore is normal. Sore in a way that changes how you move is worth paying attention to.

Keep moving, lightly. Complete rest tends to stiffen things up more than an easy walk does. Sleep is the part that actually does the work, and it's the part everyone skips.

If it's the same spot every time you train hard, that's a pattern rather than bad luck.

"I don't want to be cracked."

It's the single most common reason people don't book, and it's a completely reasonable thing to say out loud at a first appointment.

The instrument in this photo is an activator. It's spring-loaded, and it delivers one quick, controlled impulse to a single joint - no twisting, no slow build-up of pressure, and no noise.

It isn't a lesser option or a consolation prize. It's a different way of applying force, and for some joints and some people it's the one that fits.

Traditional adjusting also comes in a far wider range of setups than most people picture, several of them much gentler than the version in your head.

So the useful thing to say when you book is just that: I'd rather not be cracked. And we can still work with that.

Most people picture acupuncture as something that happens to a back, or for stress.

This is a knee.

What's practised here is Western medical acupuncture, and the difference from traditional Chinese medicine is mostly in how the points get chosen. The reasoning is anatomical - working with the structure that's actually the problem - rather than following meridian theory. Which is why the needles go where the trouble is, and why a knee, an elbow or a shoulder is as likely a target as a back.

Dr. Morgan Quick trained in it as an addition to her chiropractic practice. It sits alongside the rest of her care rather than replacing any of it - one more way into a problem, not a separate service you'd book instead.

Whether it's useful for what you've got is an assessment question, and sometimes the answer is no.

"Getting adjusted" sounds like something done to your back as a whole. It isn't.

Your spine is a column of individual joints, and at any given moment some are moving well and some aren't. The point of the assessment is working out which - because applying force to a segment that already moves freely doesn't achieve much, and that segment is usually the one most willing to make a noise.

So: assessment first, to find the joint that isn't moving the way it should. Then a controlled force, in a specific direction, to that joint. Not the whole back. Not wherever cracks easiest.

It's also why the same person doesn't get the same adjustment every visit. What needed attention last month may be fine now, and something else may not be.
