DISCLAIMER this page does not provide clinical interventions & is not crisis service *No previous art experience necessary to engage in Expressive Arts Therapy. The Expressive Arts is an approach that combines poetry & story telling, music & sound, visual arts, movement, drama, presence (and more) to foster deep personal growth and community development. When used therapeutically the expressive ar

ts are a tool for self-discovery, self-care, self-reflection, connecting with our inner-wisdom and for creating our own clarity. It is a resource-based approach, where you can feel supported to explore your inner world. Through presence, my approach is unique to each client and my practice is moment specific, situation specific and person specific. As the client, you get to decide what questions to be with and how. As the practitioner, I will create a safe container for you to engage with your questions through the Expressive Arts. Together we will identify what works for you, and I will honour what you need. You can expect to come away from our time together feeling witnessed and connected. I came to Expressive Arts naturally, as in my personal life I have facilitated monthly women’s Circles for the past nine years. The purpose of these circles is to provide a safe space to foster a supportive community among women where we can tune into ourselves and our own intuition. I offer participants an opportunity to hold space for one another, practice self-reflection and engage with the creative process through journaling, meditation, poetry, music and conversation- all elements of an Expressive Arts practice! These monthly circles invite connection, healing and pause into all of our lives. As a host and facilitator, I curate a safe space and I promote increased well-being for myself and the women who attend these circles. I will draw from this experience and bring it into my practice as I support you. I started my own wellness journey when I attended my first yoga class at 14 years old. Then at 18, I began learning about presence and mindfulness and have continued to practice presence, mindfulness & various forms of meditation ever since. In addition to this practice, I read and write poetry, spend time with nature, dance in my living room and sing while I'm cooking. As a personal interest I also engage regularly with books, articles and podcasts on western psychology and Buddhist psychology. Expressive Arts has its roots in Indigenous ways of healing and I respectfully acknowledge that Indigenous cultures have used the arts for healing since time out of mind. Thank you for reading my bio and for considering me as your practitioner. Through a kind and compassionate approach, I look forward to supporting and igniting your creativity and path to wellness through the therapeutic use of the arts. “Being able to hover calmly and objectively over our thoughts, feelings, and emotions (an ability I’ll call mindfulness throughout this book) and then take our time to respond allows the executive brain to inhibit, organize, and modulate the hardwired automatic reactions preprogrammed into the emotional brain.”

“The brain-disease model overlooks four fundamental truths: (1) our capacity to destroy one another is matched by our capacity to heal one another. Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being; (2) language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping us to define what we know, and finding a common sense of meaning; (3) we have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching; and (4) we can change social conditions to create environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive.

When we ignore these quintessential dimensions of humanity, we deprive people of ways to heal from trauma and restore their autonomy. Being a patient, rather than a participant in one’s healing process, separates suffering people from their community and alienates them from an inner sense of self.”

“Semrad taught us that most human suffering is related to love and loss and that the job of therapists is to help people “acknowledge, experience, and bear” the reality of life—with all its pleasures and heartbreak. “The greatest sources of our suffering are the lies we tell ourselves,” he’d say, urging us to be honest with ourselves about every facet of our experience. He often said that people can never get better without knowing what they know and feeling what they feel.”

“We also learned that trauma affects the imagination ... Imagination is absolutely critical to the quality of our lives. Our imagination enables us to leave our routine everyday existence by fantasizing about travel, food, s*x, falling in love, or having the last word—all the things that make life interesting. Imagination gives us the opportunity to envision new possibilities—it is an essential launchpad for making our hopes come true. It fires our creativity, relieves our boredom, alleviates our pain, enhances our pleasure, and enriches our most intimate relationships. When [traumatized] people are compulsively and constantly pulled back into the past, to the last time they felt intense involvement into deep emotions, they suffer from a failure of imagination, a loss of mental flexibility. Without imagination there is no hope, no chance to envision a better future, no place to go, no goal to reach...”
