Feel the difference.

We are posting a lot about our workshop as we know busy parents need reminders (at least we do, and many of them!) Link: journey-parenting.eventbrite.ca

We will have a guest speaker on the second day of the workshop sharing about how this approach applies to children with autism. Please join us if you can!

Here is a simple three-step response to try during a difficult parenting moment:

1. Regulate yourself
Before finding the perfect words, notice your breathing, tone, expression, and speed.

2. Meet the emotion
“You were really hoping that would happen.”
“This feels unfair.”
“You seem worried about tomorrow.”

3. Hold the boundary
“I will not let you hit.”
“The answer is still no.”
“We can talk about this, but we are not calling each other names.”

Regulation. Connection. Leadership.

It will not make every hard moment disappear. But it can help prevent one hard moment from becoming a much larger storm.

Our online parenting workshop takes place September 26 and 27.

Validation is not agreement.

You can say:
“I understand why you are angry.”

And still say:
“You may not hit.”
You can say:
“It makes sense that you are disappointed.”

And still say:
“The answer is no.”
You can say:
“You really did not want to leave.”

And still help your child put on their shoes.

Validation communicates:
Your feelings matter to me.
A boundary communicates:
I will help keep you and others safe.

Children need both.

Do you find it harder to validate emotions or hold the boundary?
We will practise bringing these two skills together during our

September parenting workshop.

New Blog Post Alert!
Some of you may know already that I am developing a parenting workshop on resilience building. This blog post is a preliminary glance at some of what my deep dive into resilience research is teaching me. The deeper I go, the more convinced I am that this is where the mental health field as well as us as parents need to focus our energy on.

We have become very good at making life more comfortable. Groceries arrive at our door, entertainment is instant, and mundane tasks can be automated. Waiting, boredom, inconvenience, and effort are increasingly things we can avoid. In many ways, this is wonderful. But I wonder if there is a cost.

Have you ever known exactly how you wanted to respond to your child, but found yourself reacting differently in the moment?

Most parents do not struggle because they have never heard a parenting strategy.

They know they are supposed to stay calm.
They know validation matters.
They know yelling usually makes things worse.
But knowing what to do and being able to do it while stressed are two different things.

Sometimes the real obstacle is a parenting block:
• Feeling disrespected
• Worrying that empathy will encourage the behaviour
• Fear about your child’s future
• Guilt about past mistakes
• Your own experience of being parented

Our workshop is not simply another collection of parenting tips.
We will explore what gets in the way of using the tools you already know.

September 26 and 27, online.
