Day 18, today’s practice is about relationship skills:
Strong relationships are built on more than just communication. They are built on feeling heard, understood, and valued.
Often, when someone is speaking, we are already thinking about what we want to say next. Active listening encourages us to slow down, stay present, and focus on understanding rather than responding. This can reduce misunderstandings and strengthen trust in our relationships.
Counselling helps develop communication skills that improve connection, empathy, and emotional awareness. Learning how to truly listen can have a positive impact on relationships with partners, friends, family members, and colleagues.
Today we practice active listening.
Tool:
Active Listening
When someone shares something important, try paraphrasing what you heard before responding.
For example:
“I've been feeling overwhelmed with everything lately.”
Response:
“It sounds like you've been carrying a lot on your shoulders and feeling stretched pretty thin.”
Paraphrasing helps avoid confusion and shows the other person that you are genuinely listening and trying to understand their experience.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer someone isn't advice. It's helping them feel heard.
