The biggest misconception about regenerative medicine is that it can fix anything.

It cannot. And any clinic that tells you otherwise is selling, not assessing.

At our private clinic in Kelowna, the conversation starts somewhere else entirely. Before we talk about any procedure, we weigh three things:

Mitochondrial health doesn't come from a single compound — here's how we think about the full picture. ⚡

When we're building a comprehensive mitochondrial support protocol at our Kelowna clinic, we consider four key compounds working synergistically:

A 70% increase in collagen production — here's the mechanism. 🔬

GHK-Cu works on collagen at the enzymatic level. It activates lysyl oxidase — the copper-dependent enzyme responsible for cross-linking collagen fibres. Without that cross-linking, collagen structure is weak. With it, you get durable, organized connective tissue.

The result: GHK-Cu can drive up to a 70% increase in collagen production. But it doesn't stop there. The same mechanism influences elastin and glycosaminoglycans — the building blocks of supple, resilient skin.

The cosmetic base — a cream-like moisturizer — is ideal for facial application, targeting the skin's surface with a familiar, easy-to-apply texture. Some patients also use this format directly on their hairline, working it into the edge of the scalp where they prefer the feel of a cream over a liquid.

The foam formulation is designed for scalp application — specifically for reaching the scalp beneath existing hair. The liquid consistency allows it to be worked through the hair and contact the scalp directly, which is critical for stimulating follicle growth where hair is still present. For areas like the back of the head or wherever you need to access the scalp beneath coverage, the foam is simply more effective.

SS31 is one of the most targeted mitochondrial compounds we use — here's what it's actually doing. 🔬

SS31 selectively binds to cardiolipin — a phospholipid located exclusively on the inner mitochondrial membrane. By binding there, it stabilizes the electron transport chain complexes, preventing the dysfunction that leads to mitochondrial resistance and declining energy production.

The downstream effects:
- Improved mitochondrial function
- Supported mitogenesis (formation of new mitochondria)
- Enhanced ATP production
- Reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) during ATP synthesis
- Active scavenging of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, peroxynitrite, and hydroxyl radical

The best hair restoration protocols combine proven ingredients — not just one. 🧬

At our Kelowna clinic, our compounding pharmacy can formulate GHK-Cu with a range of complementary ingredients to create a targeted hair restoration product. Minoxidil is the most common combination — and often finasteride as well.

One important nuance our pharmacists advise: if the ingredient list gets too long, we recommend splitting into two separate products. Diluting GHK-Cu by adding too many actives in the same formulation can reduce its effective concentration — and that defeats the purpose.

Our goal is to design a protocol where each ingredient works at the concentration it needs to.

Good news for patients interested in SS31 and MOTS-C: access is expanding. 🔬

MOTS-C is currently available through compounding pharmacies. SS31 (also known as elamipretide or Bendavia in the US) has an approved brand name for the treatment of Barth syndrome — which means it can be used off-label for other indications under physician supervision. However, the brand-name product comes at a premium, and SS31 is now also moving into compounding pathways, which should bring the cost down significantly.

Off-label use of an approved drug is quite different from using a non-approved compound — it's a recognized and established practice in medicine when the physician has clinical rationale for its use.

At our clinic in Kelowna, we work with regulated Canadian compounding pharmacies for MOTS-C and monitor the availability of SS31 through both pathways. As access evolves, we ensure our patients can benefit from these advances in a properly supervised, physician-led setting.
