Little pupdate on Rosy 🐶

As she squeaks her elephant toy beside me in bed I’m just overwhelmed with how much love I have for her.

Before I started this business I worked for a non profit. My job was to raise funds to help subsidize those who couldn’t afford alternative health care services. A huge part of what we did was raise money to help people obtain service dogs. It was the first time I realized service dogs were for more than seeing for the sightless. Anxiety, depression, Parkinson’s, learning disabilities were all reasons that people stated for wanting a service dog.

So fast forward to this morning laying here with Rosy I’m realizing that in so many ways she gives me these same benefits I heard about years ago with those clients.

And I’m finally realizing there is no “us and them”. We are all in need of some external love, no matter how self sufficient we are. Oh and this year amplified that for me!

Rosy has totally taught me how to receive love with grace. 💛

Also... she’s officially as tall as me standing up!

Rosy saw her first snow yesterday morning and I was really happy to see her jump around and eat it all up, but then I came back inside and wanted an excuse to turn the oven on 😂 (not a dark joke, just very cold lol).

And with all of the apples I have right now I grabbed three small ones and sliced them real thin, set the oven to 205 F and sprinkled them with cinnamon and a bit of coconut sugar.

Three hours later, after flipping them once in between, I had apple chips! They’re one of my favourite snacks! 😋 absolutely the best replacement for chips!

This was about 20 hours ago and guess how many apple chips I have left?

Why I still love cereal, but I make my own 🌾

Guys, I used to be a cereal addict. I thought it was so healthy (if I pair anything with almond milk it’s healthy right?) and I would eat 2 or three bowls in the morning.

It was one of the first things I replaced when I began to learn about nutrition. I was a long distance runner, and not only did Cheerios and Shreddies NOT fuel my runs, it actually perpetuated a crash I felt every single day around 2 pm where I would crave all the sugar in sight.

You see, cereals like Cheerios, Shreddies, basically any you can find on a store shelf are full of fragmented ingredients. Many list sugar as the second or third ingredient. They are highly processed to appeal to our taste buds, and I’m talking about the ones that are marketed as healthy! This is not real food. Your body obtains very little nutrition from these cereals.

So I make my own. When I do want some cereal, I make a big batch of muesli. It takes 0.05 seconds to make, stores well for a long time, and is full of healthy dates, nuts, seeds and oats. Find this autumn rendition in my Immune Ready e-book, free to download now!

How can you support your immune system through diet? 🌿

The link between an inflammatory diet and lowered immune function is becoming quite clear. When our diet is contributing to chronic inflammation the immune system is stressed because it’s being called upon to address the inflammation. Moreover, if our diet is contributing to inflammation it might not be feeding our immune cells the nutrients they need to work their best.

What is an inflammatory diet, though?

🌿 a diet that is moderate to high in refined sugar (think sweets, most packaged granola bars, cookies and breads)

🌿 high intake of fried food

🌿 animal meat tends to be inflammatory especially if it’s conventionally produced or eaten more than 5 times per week.

🌿 processed oils higher in omega 6 than omega 3s. Lots of packaged food products contain these, sadly even “healthy” ones like the beloved Oatly oat milk.

🌿 eating food you’re sensitive or allergic to ❗️anyone who can’t digest lactose or gluten but still consumes it! Even with a digestive enzyme we see damage to the gut which houses so much of our immune system.

For all of this and simple solutions download my free Immune Ready Guide 💛 linked in my bio!

When your relationship with your body is off, you might be experiencing this:

> tethering your self worth to your diet and your weight

> yo-yoing between restrictive and over indulgent eating

> caving to the pressures of social media, including the ever-increasing inability to know what’s altered and what isn’t

> trying fad diets, then “failing” because they under nourish you

The cycle stops here!!
FACT: literally everything is more important than your body shape
FACT: when you focus on nourishment and address the underlying issues you’re facing, your body will balance itself out
FACT: unfortunately it’s impossible to compare yourself to photos on the internet. Focus on you, babe!

On I’m actually writing out my intentions for the month of October and one of them is to cut back on my coffee consumption! 😆 I know it’s a bit ironic, but this shift feels right. If it’s a morning ritual you’re after, but you’re feeling anxious, tired, backed up 💩 or acidic, might I recommend switching to an herbal tea or matcha?

Keep an eye out because I’ll be posting an amazing coffee alternative this weekend that’s high in protein and healthy fats, and completely delicious! 🍵

Just because it’s September does not mean it isn’t still SUMMER! Don’t forget about all those zucchini, tomatoes, kale, chard, peaches and melons our farmers are still harvesting! I’m not ready to let go of these warm summer fireside evenings 🧡
