Help Reduce Cochlear Implant Wait Times for British Columbians
Where you live shouldn’t determine how long you wait for essential hearing care.
A new national report found that adults in British Columbia are currently waiting 40 to 48 months for cochlear implant surgery, the longest wait times in Canada. The recommended timeline is six months or less.
For adults with severe to profound hearing loss, cochlear implants can restore access to speech and communication when hearing aids are no longer effective. Every year spent waiting can mean increased social isolation, communication difficulties, employment challenges, mental health impacts, and a higher risk of cognitive decline.
The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association is calling on the Province of British Columbia to:
→ Increase funding for cochlear implant procedures
→ Reduce wait times to medically appropriate levels
→ Publicly report assessment and surgery wait times
If you believe British Columbians deserve timely access to medically necessary hearing care, please add your name to this advocacy campaign.
Together, we can help ensure that people who qualify for cochlear implants receive the care they need when they need it.
