📚 Book Club Pick: The Anxious Generation

This month we’re reading The Anxious Generation, which dives into the rise in anxiety and mental health challenges, especially in younger generations. It explores how shifts in childhood, independence, and the introduction of smartphones and social media have fundamentally changed how we grow up, connect, and cope. It’s one of those books that sparks a lot of “wow, that explains a lot” moments and opens the door to some really important conversations.

And a little reminder about how our book club works:

You do not have to finish the book.
You do not even have to start the book.

If you want to come for good conversation, meet like-minded people, and be part of a warm, welcoming space, you are absolutely invited. No pressure, no expectations, just connection 🤍

Perimenopause 🤝 midsection weight gain

As estrogen starts to fluctuate (and overall trend down), your body becomes a bit more prone to storing fat centrally, aka around the belly.

A few things happening behind the scenes:

🍑 Estrogen shifts → we move away from hips/thigh storage and toward abdominal storage
🧁 Insulin sensitivity changes → your body is more likely to store energy rather than use it efficiently
😣 Cortisol + stress load → higher stress = more signaling to store fat, especially midsection
💪🏽 Muscle mass naturally declines → which impacts metabolism and how your body uses glucose
🛌 Sleep disruptions (hello, 3am wakeups) → also play into appetite, cravings, and fat storage

So yes… for many women, some degree of belly weight gain in perimenopause is common

But “common” doesn’t mean “nothing you can do about it”

This is where we shift from
“why is this happening to me?” → “how do I support my body through this?”

Focus:
* Eating enough protein
* Strength training regularly
* Supporting blood sugar stability
* Actually addressing stress
* Supporting sleep however you can
* And in some cases, looking at hormone therapy support

It’s not about trying to get your 25-year-old body back
It’s about understanding your physiology now and working with it, not against it

And no, cutting carbs for 3 days isn’t the solution 😉

If sleep is inconsistent, stress is running the show, meals are skipped or lacking protein and fiber, and movement is an afterthought, no supplement stack is going to fully bridge that gap.

The real work (and the real results) come from:
• prioritizing quality sleep
• building stress resilience
• eating in a way that actually nourishes your body
• moving regularly and with intention

Then, if needed, supplements can layer in to support those systems, not replace them.

Think of them as the finishing touch, not the starting point.

Anyway…
eat your protein
lift something heavy
have some fiber

Good luck out there!

Ever feel like my intake questions are a little… all over the place? 😅

Yes, I really did just ask about your sleep, your stress levels, your digestion, your cycle, and exactly how you spend your mornings. But I promise it’s not just curiosity, it’s clinical strategy.

In naturopathic medicine, we know that symptoms don’t exist in isolation. Those small details you might think are “random” are often the most important pieces of the puzzle. My goal is to see the full picture so we can address the root cause, rather than just placing a band-aid on a single symptom.

When I say “tell me everything,” I truly mean it. Every detail helps us build a path toward your best health. 🤍

One of those oddly specific perimenopause symptoms no one talks about… itchy ears!!

Who spotted it?!

✨ Big news for women in BC! ✨

Starting March 1, 2026, menopause hormone therapy (MHT) will be free for eligible residents under the new National Pharmacare Plan.

Here’s what you need to know:
• Must be a BC resident enrolled in MSP
• Coverage happens automatically at the pharmacy
• You still need a prescription from your healthcare provider
• Many common MHT options like estrogen, progesterone, patches, creams, gels are included

This is such a huge step forward for women and midlife health! More access, fewer cost barriers!

I’ve created a free Menopause Hormone Therapy Cheat Sheet to help you understand what MHT is, who it’s for, and what to know before starting.

I am so excited for our next Health and Wellness Book Club read, Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. This book dives into the science of sleep and why it is one of the most powerful tools we have for our brain, hormones, mood, immune system, and long term health. Walker breaks down what actually happens when we sleep, what goes wrong when we do not get enough, and how better sleep can improve everything from focus and memory to metabolism and emotional resilience. It is eye opening, practical, and such an important conversation, especially in a world where we all tend to run on empty.

If you have ever struggled with sleep, felt wired and tired, or wondered how rest connects to your overall health, this one is for you.

🗓 Date: Monday March 2nd
⏰ Time: 7pm
📍 Location: Catalyst Movement Clinic

You can RSVP at the link in my bio. Can’t wait to chat about this one together 🤍

Hey, I’m Dr. Brittany! I’m a naturopathic doctor here in Kelowna, and I spend most of my days helping women make sense of their hormones.

Whether it’s figuring out what’s happening with your cycle, supporting fertility, or navigating perimenopause, I’m all about blending science and a little humour.

When I’m not in the clinic, I’m probably lifting weights, playing with my kids, or catching up on our book club pick. And yes, I will be watching trashy reality tv after the kids go to bed.

If you’re into honest conversations about women’s health and want to actually understand your body, welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.
