Today is World Su***de Prevention Day and this year’s theme is, “Changing the Narrative on Su***de,” which asks us to do something simple but powerful: start the conversation.
Eating disorders can thrive in silence. Shame, secrecy, isolation, and the belief that someone’s struggles aren’t “serious enough” or that they are not “sick enough” can make it incredibly difficult to reach out. And while eating disorders are serious mental illnesses, we also know that su***de risk can be elevated among people experiencing them. Talking openly about that risk isn’t about creating fear, it’s about creating opportunities for support and intervention.
Su***de prevention and eating disorder recovery share an important message: silence doesn’t protect people, but connection can. This World Su***de Prevention Day, let’s start the conversation. Ask the question. Listen without judgment. Take concerns seriously. And please remember that reaching out for help isn’t weakness, it is one of the bravest things you can do ❤️🩹
