William Coverdale was a preeminent local architect responsible for many of Kingston's most iconic historic buildings. His notable designs include the Kingston Asylum for the Criminally Insane, portions of Kingston City Hall, the facade and tower of St. George's Cathedral, and several local churches. He also served as the master builder for the Kingston Penitentiary during the construction of its primary structures and gatehouse.

Did you know... Cataraqui Cemetery is uniquely honored to hold two distinct National Historic Site designations?

Our expansive grounds were recognized in their entirety in 2011 as an outstanding example of a 19th-century rural garden cemetery, intentionally designed with winding paths, natural water features, and a picturesque landscape to inspire contemplation and comfort.

Within this park-like setting lies our second designation: the Macdonald family gravesite. Independently recognized in 1938, it is the final resting place of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, alongside other prominent figures who shaped our nation. Passing through our historic stone gates, visitors enter a carefully preserved sanctuary that acts as a steward for both local and national heritage.

John Creighton was a multifaceted public servant who served as the warden of the Kingston Penitentiary from 1870 to 1885. Beyond his warden duties, his career included serving three terms as mayor, working as a job printer and bookseller, presiding as a police magistrate, and serving as president of the Kingston Typographical Society.

🌸 As late summer settles over Cataraqui Cemetery, our signature hydrangeas are entering their beautiful blush phase. Transitioning from bright summer white to warm shades of dusty rose, these blossoms add natural color to our over 85-acre historic landscape.

A little history:
Introduced during the late 19th century by Superintendent David Nicol as part of an extensive grounds beautification program, hydrangeas remain our signature flower to this day. We now proudly maintain over 200 of these beautiful shrubs across the cemetery.

Designed in the rural garden cemetery tradition, our grounds were intentionally planted to create a peaceful, park-like sanctuary. Today, these vibrant hydrangeas not only provide a serene environment for quiet reflection but also serve as a vital late-season nectar source for migrating Monarch butterflies and local pollinators.

Take time to explore the winding paths this week to experience the changing season.

NOTE: Individuals with bee allergies should be aware of the pollinators around these flowers. 🐝

Known as the "King" of Kingston, John Counter (1799-1862) was a massive civic booster who served as the town and city's mayor eight times between 1841 and 1855. He played a crucial role in securing Kingston's early status as the capital of the United Province of Canada and traveled to England in 1842 to fundraise for the new City Hall. His extensive business ventures included a marine railway, a car ferry, an iron foundry, and helping to establish the local Board of Trade. Although his ambitious investments eventually forced him into bankruptcy and he died in poverty, he was posthumously honoured with the naming of John Counter Boulevard.

Did you know a portion of the grounds at Cataraqui Cemetery originally served as a Quaker burial site?

This specific area was utilized by the local Quaker community until 1801.

They later transferred the deed back to the Cemetery in 1907, and the land was subsequently repurposed. Since its integration, the land has been redivided and reused, meaning it is no longer exclusively a Quaker section today.

To mark the site's bicentennial in 2001, a white marble obelisk was raised in remembrance of the original burial ground.
