๐Ÿ’œ NICU Fund-Racer on the Loose! ๐Ÿ’œ

On October 3, Willem Sagriff will take on the Point Municipal Park track in Sydenham, with one goal in mind: running 100km to raise $15,000 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

Willem was inspired to take on the challenge after his daughter was born in June 2025. His familyโ€™s room was just past the NICU, giving him a close-up reminder of how fortunate they were that their daughter was born healthy, and of the care families rely on when their babies need it most.

After already surpassing his original $6,000 fundraising goal, Willem has raised $13,200 and is now training to tackle the 100-kilometre challenge in 11โ€“12 hours.

โ€œThis is about supporting the tiniest members of our community,โ€ Willem shared, โ€œand the teams that care for them.โ€

Help Willem reach his $15,000 goal and support the NICU at KHSC. ๐Ÿ’œ

Hidden inside KHSC is the world's largest allergy research facility.

One of the most advanced of its kind, the Environmental Exposure Unit (EEU), is a partnership between Kingston Allergy Research, the KHSC Research Institute and Queen's University. It can expose up to 120 participants simultaneously to carefully controlled levels of airborne allergensโ€”helping researchers evaluate new allergy treatments in a safe, consistent environment.

For decades, the EEU has helped advance allergy research and improve care for millions of people living with seasonal allergies around the world.

Sometimes, achievements in health care arenโ€™t powered by new technology. Instead, theyโ€™re made possible by teamwork...and a little bit of resourcefulness.

When a young patient arrived at KHSC with a sewing pin lodged deep inside their lung, the initial thought was that removing it would require major surgeryโ€”and the loss of up to 25 per cent of their lung.

Instead of heading straight to the operating room, an extraordinary team of respirologists, thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and learners spent four hours doing something remarkable. They "MacGyvered" equipment, swapped tools, tested idea after idea and never stopped asking, "What else can we try?"

While many of their ideas didn't work, each one brought them closer to the solution.

Just as the team was preparing for surgery, one final idea worked. The pin was safely removed using a scope to access the patient's airway, allowing the patient to go home the very next day avoiding major surgery and a stay in the ICU.

It's a remarkable patient storyโ€”but it's also a powerful example of the culture at KHSC.

"There wasnโ€™t any kind of hierarchy or ego," says respirologist Dr. Kirsten Nesset. "Everyone felt comfortable sharing ideas. It didn't matter if you were a physician, a nurse, or a learner. We all had the same goal."

When every voice is valued, hierarchy gives way to collaboration, the best ideas can come from anyone, and extraordinary things can happen.

When Sarah Wynn went for routine mammogram, she wasn't expecting to hear the words, "you have breast cancer."

She's now courageously sharing her story to encourage other women to book their own routine breast screening...and her message is already making a big difference.

Following Sarah's post (you can read it here: Wynn Farms), Breast Imaging Kingston saw an incredible response. A typical day brings about 50 self-referrals. By Wednesday last-week, that number had already climbed to 300.

Sarah's experience is also a powerful reminder that breast cancer doesn't always have warning signs since she experienced no symptoms, lumps, or bumps.

"A mammogram will detect cancer when there's no signs or symptoms," says Dana MacPhail, KHSCโ€™s Manager of Breast Imaging Kingston. "The good thing about finding out early is that you're going to have less invasive treatment and an easier recovery than if you waited until you were having symptoms."

Sarah turned one of the most difficult moments of her life into an opportunity to help others. She says she wanted to "use my pain for purpose." Her courage has already inspired more women to take an important step that could save lives.

If you're between the ages of 40 and 74, you can book a mammogram through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (a referral from your doctor is not necessary). Early detection saves lives. To book your mammogram call 613-384-4284 or you can book online at: https://bit.ly/3RNwJg0.

Thank you, Sarah, for reminding our community that one story can inspire hundreds of people to prioritize their health. ๐Ÿ’—

For patients living with chronic kidney disease, the journey can last years. Having one familiar face to guide you through it can make all the difference.

If you've received kidney care at KHSC over the past decade, there's a good chance you've met Kim Turcotte.

As the Renal Program's Vascular Access Coordinator, Kim is often one of the first people patients meet when dialysis becomes a possibility, and one of the few they'll continue to see throughout their care.

"I try to take some of the burden and worry from them and let them know I'm going to get them through to the next step."

Whether she's preparing patients for procedures, coordinating care or answering questions by phone or email, Kim's focus is helping patients feel informed, supported and less alone.

"I tell people dialysis does not have to be their life. It's a means to allow them to live the life they choose outside of their illness... I want them to know they're not doing this alone."

Helping patients see beyond their diagnosis is one of the most meaningful parts of her work.

"What drew me to renal was going back to the basic premise of why I became a nurse: to care for people, not necessarily their illness. It's about caring for that person and their family as a whole, and looking at the big picture."

For Kim, that's what nursing has always been about: making a difficult journey a little less overwhelming, one step at a time.

Meet Kim in this week's People of KHSC feature. ๐Ÿ’™

A huge thank you to every donor, golfer, sponsor, volunteer and supporter who made this year's tournament such a success. Your generosity is helping advance earlier detection, expand access to screening, support groundbreaking breast cancer research and strengthen breast health services for thousands of women across our region.

Every dollar raised supports initiatives led by Dr. Doris Jabs, KHSC's Rose of Hope Clinical Chair in Breast Health, and innovative research like Dr. Glykeria Martou's ROSE studyโ€”work that is improving care today while shaping the future of breast cancer treatment.

For tournament participant Cheryl Burwash, Rose of Hope is more than a day of golf. She credits the tournament with saving her life. Two years ago, her mammogram found a small cancerous lump in her breast. Because of screening, it was caught early and today she is cancer free.

โ€œIf I hadn't heard that speaker talk about the importance of getting regular mammograms and staying on that screening cycle, I probably would have kept putting it off,โ€ says Cheryl. โ€œHearing that message brought the importance of screening to the forefront for me. It made all the difference.โ€

Stories like Cheryl's are a powerful reminder that your support doesn't just fund programs. It saves lives. From all of us at KHSC, thank you for making hope possible. ๐Ÿ’—

๐ŸŽ‰ Big welcome to the nurse practitioners (NP) and registered practical nurses (RPN) who have recently joined Kingston Health Sciences Centre's (KHSC) Detoxification Centre. Their addition to the team is an important step forward for addiction care in southeastern Ontario.

This growth is part of a $1.84 million investment from Ontario Health, which brings 24/7 RPN coverage, weekend NP support, and four new medical beds for clients with higher-level needs. Together, these changes mean safer, more supported withdrawal care for our communities.

โœ… 2 new NPs and 5 new RPNs hired, and more to come

As the largest publicly funded withdrawal management centre between Ottawa and Oshawa, KHSC's Detox Centre is a lifeline for our region, supporting over 1090 clients through more than 1,390 admissions last year alone.

These enhancements are allowing us to boost capacity, which has already increased by 16 per cent, and build on the incredible work our staff do every day.

For patients and families arriving at KHSC, a warm welcome can make all the difference. Whether it's helping someone find their way through the hospital, offering reassurance before an appointment, or simply sharing a conversation in their own language, volunteers are often among the first faces they meet.

This week, five of those volunteers were recognized with awards at the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards, a provincial honour celebrating individuals who have provided years of dedicated service to a single organization.

Among those recognized is Kid Tauchid, whose 20 years of service have made him one of KHSC's most familiar and beloved volunteers.

Kid believes volunteering is about more than giving time - it's about choosing to stay connected.

"You have to have it in your heart," he said. "Do something for the community. It gives you a reason to get up in the morning."

That spirit is reflected in every volunteer being recognized this year. In total, 14 volunteers were nominated for awards, among those volunteers the others recognized include:

J.P. Morales for four years of service
Judith Gould for 15 years of service
Cheryl Turner and Brenda Bartlett for 20 years of service

Collectively, these volunteers have supported patients and families through countless moments of uncertainty, celebration and healing.

Providing timely access to care for our community remains a top priority for Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). To better support care across both the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) and Emergency Department (ED), KHSC is updating the operating hours of the UCC located at the Hotel Dieu Hospital site.

๐— ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜†: 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

These updated hours are designed to provide patients with more consistent and predictable access to the UCC. In the past, the UCC often needed to stop registering new patients earlier than its posted closing time due to resource availability and patient volumes. This new schedule is expected to reduce the need for frequent early closures of patient registration.

As a result, patients can have greater confidence that the UCC will remain open and accepting patients throughout its posted hours. In exceptional circumstances, registration may close early if the clinical team determines they cannot safely accept additional patients.

KHSC is also adjusting how physicians are scheduled between the UCC and the ED. On weekends, one physician per day will be reassigned from the UCC to the ED to help improve wait-times in the Emergency Department at the Kingston General Hospital site.

๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ: The UCC is intended for health concerns that require assessment within 24 hours but are not life-threatening. If your concern is not urgent, please consider alternative care options at

As always, if you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest emergency department, available 24/7.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

If youโ€™ve ever visited the Orthopedics and Plastics Clinic at for a cast, splint or brace, chances are youโ€™ve met Teri Timpany.

One of just three orthopedic technicians at KHSC, sheโ€™s part of a small but mighty team supporting thousands of patients every year.

Timpany applies and removes casts and splints, fits braces, provides wound care and takes out sutures and staples.

โœจ While sheโ€™s an expert at what she does, itโ€™s her compassion, reassuring nature and sense of humour that truly set her apart.

โ€œPeople are usually a little anxious because they donโ€™t know what to expect,โ€ says Timpany. โ€œI explain everything Iโ€™m doing before I do it. If I can get someone to smile or laugh and make them feel more at ease, it makes their visit a little less stressful.โ€

Sometimes, that starts with choosing a cast colour.

A lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, Timpany admits she has a favourite ๐Ÿ’™.

โ€œThe most popular colour is blue. I call it Toronto Maple Leafs blue,โ€ she laughs. โ€œYou can usually tell pretty quickly whoโ€™s a Montreal Canadiens fan because they donโ€™t always want the blue. It makes for some fun banter.โ€

Timpany always knew she wanted to work in health care. Finding the right path just took a little longer than expected.

โ€œI like to joke that it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up.โ€

Sheโ€™s worked as an ambulance attendant, bank teller, rubber stamp maker, sign engraver, gas station assistant manager and even an office manager. Itโ€™s safe to say sheโ€™s built quite the rรฉsumรฉ.

Then, in 2015, she saw a television news story about a new orthopedic technician program in her hometown of London, Ontario.

โ€œIt looked hands-on and gave me the chance to interact with people, which was exactly what I was looking for.โ€

She enrolled in the program while in her 50s and joined KHSC in December 2016.

Nearly 10 years later, she says she still loves coming to work. A big reason is the team around her ๐Ÿซถ.

โ€œJohnson 7 is like a family. We support each other, help each other and genuinely enjoy working together. Everyone is kind, thoughtful and always willing to lend a hand.โ€

Looking back, Timpany is grateful she took a chance on a new career.

โ€œIโ€™m very proud of the work I do. Putting on a cast looks easy until you try to do it. It takes practice to apply a comfortable, functional cast and Iโ€™ve had many patients thank me at follow-up appointments. Itโ€™s a great feeling knowing something I did has made a difference.โ€

Itโ€™s the kind of care that sticks with people long after the cast comes off โค๏ธ.
