🌍HAPPY EARTH DAY🌎

It also happens to be Throwback Thursday, so today we’re throwing it back to my Ecuador trip. On this mission trip, myself along with several classmates conducted thousands of eye exams, and supplied donated prescription eyewear to underprivileged populations! Whenever you drop off your old glasses, they go on trips like these. In the future, I hope to be able to do more of these trips🤞🏼 Absolutely the most rewarding experience💚💙

Eye exams are much more than determining whether or not you are 20/20!
1) Ensuring that your vision is stable. Sometimes changes in prescription can happen subtly over an extended period of time. These small prescription changes can often make a big difference in certain situations like driving at night.

2) Certain changes to your prescription can be linked to a disease process, like a worsening cataract, diabetes, or keratoconus. Watching these changes over time is key to a diagnosis.

3) We assess your binocular vision. You could be 20/20 and still get eye strain or even double vision. Sometimes these issues can be corrected with prism, or vision training.

4) Ocular health. I cannot stress this enough. The amount of times that optometrists have found significant health findings that the patient never even knew about would astonish you. Optometrists look for signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and some optometrists have even found brain tumours. Not to mention the ocular diseases we monitor for like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

There is so much more to eye exams that 20/20. Has it been over two years since your last exam?? You’re definitely due for one then!! Call one of the numbers in my bio to book today!

There are many systemic conditions that can be detected on routine eye exams! The following are just a few on a long list.
1. diabetes mellitus. Up to 21% of patients with type 2 diabetes have some form of retinopathy when they are first diagnosed. Common signs include retinal hemorrhages, or fluid leakage.
2. IIH or idiopathic intracranial hypertension is an elevated pressure in the brain. This causes severe headaches, and a common sign is papilledema, or swollen optic nerves.
3. thyroid dysfunction. Elevated thyroid levels can cause a wide range ocular side effects, with proptosis being the most notable. This is a bulgy-eyed appearance due to inflammation of the ocular muscles.
4. rheumatoid arthritis. This also includes other autoimmune conditions. Sometimes this inflammation can also spread to the eyes and cause uveitis. This is a painful condition where the eye becomes very red, and sensitive to light. Investigation into autoimmune conditions is often warranted when patients develop chronic or recurrent uveitis.
5. high cholesterol. High cholesterol can cause blockages in the blood vessels of your eye, just like it can cause blockages in your heart. This results in vision loss. Another sign of high cholesterol is a white ring around the cornea, known as corneal arcus.
Eye exams are much more than 20/20 and prescribing glasses. Regular routine eye exams are needed to ensure not only your ocular health, but your systemic health as well! Haven’t had an exam in over two years? You are definitely due for one! Call any of the offices in my bio to book your exam today!

Doesn’t my niece Ellie have the most beautiful blue eyes? 🦋
A baby’s eye colour is determined by genetics, but also changes throughout the first year of life. As babies get older, their irises tend to get darker. This is because it takes time for melanocytes to develop. These cells produce melanin, which is a dark pigment. The more melanocytes you have, the darker your iris will be. Most melanocyte development is complete by 6 months, but full develop can take up to a year.
Did your baby’s eyes change colour a lot? Let me know in the comments below!

It doesn’t seem like online learning will be going away anytime soon, so I thought I’d share my three common online studying eye tips! 💻
The first tip is the 20-20-20 rule. This is to give your focusing system a break. Near work engages your eyes’ natural focusing system, and this system requires muscles. Just like any other muscle in your body, these muscles can fatigue with prolonged use. This causes headaches and eye strain. Giving your eyes a 20 second break every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away can help relax these muscles. 💪🏼
My second tip is night shift mode. This makes your screen appear more yellow, and lessens the amount of blue light reaching your eyes. Blue light can disrupt your body’s natural sleep-wake cycles. So for you late night studiers, turn on your computer’s night shift mode to get a more restful night’s sleep.🌙
My third and final tip is to use a humidifier at your study station. Your blink rate decreases by 66% when looking at a screen. This means that your tears are evaporating, and you aren’t blinking as much as needed to replenish your tears. Humidifiers can help prevent and treat dry eye symptoms associated with computer use.💧
Still have more questions on what you can do? Bring in your child for an eye exam! 👩🏻‍⚕️ This is the best way for us to determine the cause of your child’s symptoms, and to treat them. Hang in there folks, we’ll get through this together.
