Many people with acid reflux are put on medications such as omeprazole, esomeprazole, and lansoprazole.

These pharmaceuticals belong to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors which have many side effects such as:
- Weakening of the stomach and ability to absorb nutrients
- Low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels
- Weaker bones and higher fracture risk
- Higher chance of gut infections like C. difficile
- Chronic kidney disease or inflammation
