Scientists have produced one of the most detailed images ever created of the human brain, mapping a tiny one-millimetre cube of brain tissue at nanoscale resolution.

Although the sample is incredibly small, it contains tens of thousands of neurons, hundreds of millions of synapses, and kilometres of microscopic wiring connecting brain cells. Creating such detailed maps requires powerful electron microscopes, advanced imaging systems, and artificial intelligence to reconstruct the tissue in three dimensions.

These high-resolution brain maps help researchers better understand how memory, learning, and cognition emerge from complex neural networks. They may also provide new insights into neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

The project demonstrates how even the smallest piece of the human brain contains an astonishing level of biological complexity.
