Period pain that affects your quality of life is a huge red flag đźš©

There are a variety of potential causes of painful periods. Some mild discomfort, fullness, or pressure in your abdomen is normal during your period. If your period forces you to put your life on hold, you should be assessed by your healthcare provider. Especially if you’re trying to conceive - many causes of painful periods can also contribute to infertility.

Start with tracking your symptoms:
â–ŞDays and severity of pain
â–ŞPainkiller use during your period
â–ŞDays of missed work or school
â–ŞOther associated symptoms, like heavy bleeding, nausea/vomiting, painful s*x, painful bowel movements

Folate supplementation before and during pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects. The terms folic acid and folate are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same.

Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9 (aka folate) found in supplements and fortified grains. It needs to be converted by our bodies (the MTHFR gene) into active folate.

Mutations in the MTHFR gene are quite common - 30-40% of Americans have a MTHFR gene mutation!

With this mutation, you may an impaired ability to convert folic acid to active folate. If your prenatal contains folic acid (most do), your body isn't able to use it all. This results in an increased risk of neural tube defects.

Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9 found in foods and activated folate supplements. Prenatal labels will say 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Since your body doesn't need to activate 5-MTHF, it is the most absorbable form of folate, whether or not you have a MTHFR gene mutation.
