Breastfeeding Buddies Waterloo Region

Breastfeeding Buddies Waterloo Region Providing FREE Peer to Peer Lactation Support in Waterloo Region and Beyond. Some in person programming will resume as Covid-19 restrictions change.

The Breastfeeding Buddies Program was initiated by breastfeeding mothers in the community and has been supporting families in Waterloo Region for the last 20 years. Recognizing the value of peer-to-peer support, the aim of the Breastfeeding Buddies Program is to help increase the number of parents achieving success in reaching *their* breastfeeding and chestfeeding goals - by supporting parents wi

th the evidence based tools, resources and information they need to make informed decisions. Breastfeeding Buddies also help parents foster connections with other nursing families and their community through virtual programming and other local events. All of our peer volunteers have at least 6 months of personal breastfeeding or chestfeeding experience, complete a 3 day training program, and receive additional education opportunities to provide quality, non judgmental, evidenced based support to other nursing families. The Me Breastfeed workshop is a prenatal class for parents and their partners to attend before the baby arrives. This practical workshop offers parents and their partner's valuable information as to what to expect in the first 7 days after birth, help with overcoming common challenges, and where to find community resources. The "Latch and Learn" and "Beyond Basics" series cover many topics such as transitioning into parenthood, milk supply, night time parenting and nursing beyond a year. All families are welcome!

On the hunt for a swimsuit you can nurse in? Check out these tips!

๐Ÿ‘‰Out for a swim with your little one? Remember, your baby's swim diapers are only meant to contain solids, not liquids - make sure the diaper you nurse your little one in is the kind of diaper that best suits your needs. A swim diaper is ideal for nursing your little one while in the water, but on dry land it's often worthwhile to change them into a traditional diaper before you nurse them - especially if they are likely to fall asleep! A quick diaper change can be a real life saver when it comes to keeping the laundry and cleaning to a minimum post swim, and help protect the stroller/car seat too.

It's which may have you wondering "Can I donate blood if I'm nursing or pumping?"

Canadian Blood Services accepts donations from eligible lactating individuals six months following the birth of a child noting that during pregnancy and lactation the body has an increased need for iron to support the development of the fetus and the production of milk. Pausing blood donation temporarily can help maintain robust hemoglobin and iron stores.

Canadian physician and leading lactation expert Dr Jack Newman states that parents who are otherwise eligible can donate blood provided they are not anemic.

The decision to donate is a personal one - your healthcare provider can help you decide if itโ€™s the right choice for you and your unique situation.

Planning to donate? Hydration is key! is over 80% water. It takes time for your body to replace the fluids you donate so be sure to focus on eating well and staying hydrated before AND after donating to ensure your body has the nutrients it needs to replace them. Canadian Blood Services reminds all donors that it's important to be well hydrated and to have eaten a full meal prior to donation. You should also plan to eat a salty snack & drink 500ml of water just before donating. You'll be offered a snack & drink immediately after donating too. Donors should continue to eat well and drink plenty of fluids throughout the rest of the day.

Be sure to plan ahead when it comes to lifting and caring for your little one. Blood donors are advised to avoid strenuous activity for six to eight hours and to avoid heavy lifting for 24 hours. Arrange any extra support you may need to help tend to your little one's needs so that you can rest and recover while protecting your milk supply by continuing to nurse or pump.
