September has a way of changing everything at once. Back to school. Maybe this means back-to-school shopping heaviness. Maybe the dread of making lunches is unbearable. You’re going back to a more predictable work week, but that means new routines, new schedules, and new expectations.

Suddenly, the slower pace of summer is gone.

For some people, that transition can bring a much bigger reaction than they expect. You might feel anxious, irritable, overwhelmed or completely unprepared, even if nothing “bad” is actually happening.

Sometimes it’s the uncertainty of doing something you’ve never done before. Other times, it’s knowing exactly what’s coming and remembering how hard it felt last time.

Try not to mistake discomfort for danger. Change can feel scary without actually being unsafe, and that feeling won’t last forever.

Give yourself time to find your footing in the new normal.

Healing doesn’t always look like “finally moving on.”

Sometimes it looks like setting boundaries, leaving a job, or having the conversation you’ve been avoiding. Maybe it looks like giving yourself permission to feel the rage that came with a betrayal or grieve the things that didn’t work out the way you hoped they would.

Therapy can be a place to safely reopen the things you had to push through at the time, but that are still impacting you now.

It can also help you recognize the difference between reacting from a hijacked nervous system and responding from a regulated one (so you can have hard conversations, express what you need, and move through big emotions without them taking over).

Healing doesn’t have to be about closing the door; it can be about finally feeling safe enough to open it.

Social media can impact your nervous system slowly.

Think of the volume on the TV being turned up one tiny notch at a time - you might not notice each increase, but eventually, it hits you, and you wonder why it’s so darn loud!

Social media is the same. You feel fine, until your shoulders are tense, your jaw is tight, and the world feels a little more threatening than it did before. It creeps up on you!

But, being informed and being constantly exposed are not the same thing.
