🙋‍♀️ One of the questions we hear most is:

“What’s the difference between a mammogram, breast ultrasound, and thermography?”

The answer is simple: they each provide different information and can all have a role in breast health.

Swipe through this carousel for a quick comparison of what each test looks for, along with the benefits and limitations of each.

Have questions about whether thermography is right for you? Our registered nurses are always happy to offer a complimentary consultation. 💛

If breast cancer doesn’t run in my family... am I still at risk? 🤔

It’s one of the questions I hear most often, and the answer surprises many women.

Almost 80% of breast cancers are considered sporadic, meaning they happen without a known inherited genetic mutation.

That doesn’t mean genetics aren’t important, they absolutely are for some families!

However for most women, breast cancer risk is influenced by a combination of factors including age, hormones, breast density, lifestyle, reproductive history, environmental exposures, and yes... sometimes simply chance. 👎

Understanding your personal risk is about looking at the whole picture, not just your family tree.

Knowing your risk can help guide decisions about:

• breast screening
• lifestyle changes
• genetic testing (when appropriate)
• conversations with your healthcare provider

Every woman’s risk profile is different.

As a breast health nurse, women often ask me:

“What do you actually do to support your own breast health?”

These are the habits I come back to again and again. Not because they’re trendy, but because they’re supported by research and they’re realistic enough to stick with over time.

🫘Prioritize fibre
🏃‍♀️ Move my body regularly
🍷Limit alcohol
🥦Eat cruciferous vegetables most days
🌸Know my breast density and personal risk factors

None of these habits can guarantee that breast cancer won’t happen. But together, they can help support overall health and may reduce risk.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect. Small, consistent choices really do add up.

✨ Which one are you already doing? And which one would you like to work on? Let me know in the comments.

It feels strange to share something beautiful while so much of our planet is hurting.

But maybe that’s exactly why we should.

This place reminds me to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember what’s still here.

May we never become so overwhelmed by the world’s pain that we stop noticing its beauty - or forget that it’s worth protecting. 🌎🍃

I’d love to know where your favourite place in nature is. Better yet, share a photo of it today. Let’s fill our feeds with reminders of what we’re working so hard to protect. 🫶🌳

Can anyone guess where this beautiful spot is? 👇

Today’s weather is no joke. 🥵

Between the extreme heat and poor air quality from wildfire smoke, many of us are spending the day feeling tired, sluggish or headachy.

Heat and wildfire smoke are affecting much of Ontario today, with health officials recommending limiting strenuous outdoor activity and staying well hydrated.

Remember that when you’re sweating, you’re losing more than just water, you also lose important electrolytes like sodium and potassium.

One of my favourite simple options is a homemade electrolyte drink:

🍋 2 cups water
🧂 ⅛–¼ tsp sea salt
🍯 1–2 tsp maple syrup or honey (optional)
🍋 Fresh lemon or lime juice

If you’d rather use a ready-made product, here are a few Canadian favourites with simple ingredients:

* Cira Hydration (my favourite flavour is Watermelon Sugar!)

* Organika Electrolytes

* Vega Sport Electrolyte Hydrator

💛 Electrolyte drinks aren’t necessary for everyone every day, but they can be helpful during prolonged heat, heavy sweating, exercise, or if you’ve been working outdoors.

How are you staying cool today? 🌿

🍃 When most people think about breast cancer risk, they think about family history. But as you’ve seen in this carousel, that’s only one piece of the puzzle.

Your age, breast density, reproductive history, previous breast biopsies, lifestyle, and family history all contribute to your overall risk.

Many of these factors can be combined using validated risk assessment tools to estimate your chance of developing breast cancer over the next 10 years and throughout your lifetime.

While these tools can’t predict whether you’ll develop breast cancer, they can help guide decisions about screening, prevention, and whether additional testing or genetic assessment may be appropriate.

Common breast cancer risk assessment tools used in Canada include:

✅ Tyrer–Cuzick (IBIS) – One of the most comprehensive models. It incorporates family history, breast density (when available), reproductive history, benign breast disease, and other personal risk factors. It is commonly used in breast imaging clinics and high-risk programs.

✅ CanRisk (BOADICEA) – Often used by genetics and hereditary cancer clinics. It estimates breast and ovarian cancer risk and can help determine whether genetic testing may be appropriate.

✅ The Gail Model (Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool) – Primarily estimates risk for women without a strong family history. It is less comprehensive than Tyrer–Cuzick but may still be appropriate in some situations.

These tools are generally completed by your family physician, nurse practitioner, breast specialist, genetics clinic, or breast imaging clinic. If you’re unsure whether a formal risk assessment would benefit you, it’s worth starting the conversation.

At Thermography Clinic Kitchener, we offer a complimentary telephone consultation to discuss your personal risk factors, breast density, screening recommendations, and help you better understand which screening options may be appropriate for you.

Whether you’re simply looking for reassurance or wondering if additional screening should be considered, we’re happy to help point you in the right direction.

Every week I meet women who are incredible caregivers.

They make appointments for everyone else, remember everyone’s birthdays, go out of their way for others.

But when it comes to themselves? “I’ve been meaning to book that…” 🫩

One of the biggest myths about prevention is that it has to be complicated, and it doesn’t have to be.

It’s the small choices we make over and over again that shape our health.

This weekend, choose one thing.

Go for a walk. Cook a nourishing meal. Spend time outside. Book the appointment you’ve been putting off. Get to bed a little earlier.

Just do one thing your future self will be grateful for.

💛 What’s your “one thing” this weekend?

If you’re only going to focus on a few things for breast health, start here. 💗

These are 5 habits I personally prioritize:

⭐️ Eating more fibre

⭐️ Moving my body regularly

⭐️ Limiting alcohol

⭐️ Eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and cauliflower

⭐️ Staying informed about my breast density and risk factors

No single food or habit can prevent breast cancer. But small, consistent choices can add up over time.

Save this post for later, share it with a friend, and follow along for more breast health education.

Questions? We’d love to connect. 🤙
