The fiery compound in red hot chili peppers is attracting attention in cancer research. Capsaicin, the natural chemical responsible for a pepper’s burning sensation, has shown an ability in laboratory studies to push certain melanoma skin cancer cells toward self-destruction.

Capsaicin activates TRPV1, a receptor best known for helping the body detect heat and pain. Scientists are now examining how this same receptor may influence cancer cell behavior. In cell-based experiments, capsaicin has affected survival signals, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and apoptosis, the programmed process cells use to remove damaged or abnormal cells.

Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer because its cells can develop ways to avoid normal death signals. That makes compounds that may reactivate those pathways particularly interesting to researchers. Capsaicin could help scientists better understand which molecular targets make melanoma cells vulnerable.
