Devon’s in there somewhere!!

For the past year, Devon worked hard earning her Advanced Vestibular Physical Therapist Certification through the University of Pittsburgh. The final module culminated in a weekend of collaboration and education in Munich, learning from the gurus and leaders of vestibular rehabilitation. She brings all that knowledge back home to help people with complex dizziness and imbalance.

"Despite widespread use among clinicians and the population, there is no high-quality evidence on the efficacy of ice for treating soft-tissue injuries.

Or.... if you want to get technical:

"Even if mostly analgesic, ice could potentially disrupt inflammation, angiogenesis and revascularisation, delay neutrophil and macrophage infiltration as well as increase immature myofibres. This may lead to impaired tissue repair and redundant collagen synthesis."

Anh Duong grew up as a competitive dancer in Prince Rupert, eventually landing at UBC to pursue her Master of Physical Therapy. She has since focused her training on all things related to rehab for the artistic athlete.

Anh has extensive training in:

Meet Annie Ospina, one of our brilliant RMTs!

Annie has been an RMT for almost a decade and has extensive training in trigger point release, Swedish massage and myofascial release. A Ladner local, she enjoys a great foreign and independent film, adventuring outside and jumping in puddles with her two kids.

Annie works Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:45am - 2pm.

You’ve probably never heard of vestibular migraine, even if you are someone who deals with frequent dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, and the occasional headache.

Vestibular migraine is one of the most common causes of recurrent dizziness, but it’s often misdiagnosed. It affects about 3% of the population, affecting women 1.5 to 5 times more than men.

The key features of vestibular migraine include:
🌀 dizziness or vertigo lasting 5 minutes to 72 hours
🌀 light and/or sound sensitivity
🌀 a current or past history of migraine

The best way to treat vestibular migraine is through a multi-pronged approach including the appropriate medication, lifestyle changes, and physiotherapy.

Here’s how physio can help:

🌀 sensory reweighting to improve improve tolerance to motion as well as visually rich and stimulating environments

A graduate from the UBC Master of Physical Therapy program, Chantal has been with us since 2022. A certified clinical exercise physiologist, they have years of experience working with people of all ages with complex conditions. Recently, Chantal has focused more on vestibular rehabilitation and is finishing up their certification in vestibular rehabilitation through 360NeuroHealth. They also offer Bike Fit as a certified provider!

Did you know the vestibular system is more than just a balance organ? The information the vestibular system collects is widely distributed throughout the brain and used in a tonne of processes!

A few areas the vestibular system had major roles in include:

🌀THE AUTONOMIC SYSTEM: aka all those things your body does automatically for you. Think blood pressure, breathing rate, digestion…
🌀 HIGHER LEVEL COGNITIVE PROCESSES: for instance, spatial navigation, learning, attention and memory
🌀 PERCEPTUAL AND MOTOR DECISION MAKING: for instance, when driving a car you need to use your sense to make good choices about when to go and when to stop
🌀 MENTAL IMAGERY AND MENTAL ROTATION: being able to visualize a space and objects. For instance, will that suitcase fit in the overhead bin?

A physio since 2011, Nicole had taken extensive training in all things pelvic health and chronic pain. She’s one of the few physios in B.C. qualified to fit pessaries! She also helps teach the new physios coming out of UBC, both in the classroom and in the clinic.
