Howdy everyone.
Ready for unsolicited update number … 4?

I’m getting better week by week. I can drive a bit, make coffee, and can finally stand long enough to shave my face!

I chuckled at myself once I could do that because I’d been getting tired of having to scrape my face several times a week, then couldn’t, and now being able to again reminded my of being 13’ish and being happy I needed to shave. It was like reaching a milestone again.

I still have a lot of mobility to work on, I had to tie my shoe the other day. That sucked

I am scheduled for a graded return to work starting on Aug 31, so fingers crossed.

And back to the rugby pitch this evening - I’m just taking inventory. Running will be a bit yet.

More unsolicited updates (at least they are not every five minutes!)

I still cannot stand long enough to shave my face and I look my age when I have a beard. Therefore I was off to the barber for another hot shave.

Thank you very much to Hailey for the fantastic work and the sticker!

I feel so much better now.

And soon the season will be upon us in all its glory!

I competed against this man in my rodeo years and figure he was the most technically perfect rider around. Always in control, square, in time, and spurring. It was a pleasure to compete against him and then watch him skyrocket in his career.

Dusty LaValley, NFR qualifier and Canadian world champion, passes away.

Seemingly shady things that are actually legit:
A bald guy going into the barbershop

It’s been almost two weeks since gravity and I had a discussion. I still can’t stand more than about 1.5 minutes before everything tightens up.

And I could not take it any longer.

On the recommendation of my friend Brendan I went to Heavy D’s Barbershop.

A big thank you to Sabeana. I feel so much better.

Big shout out to Brendan at Knead Massage Therapy for helping me in my predicament. I’ve known him for years and trust him implicitly.

I suppose I should thank my kiddo for driving me … even though I drove her countless times to events, school, and her friends’ places. It’s pay back baby !!!

Given my current predicament, if someone has any suggestions for a place for a hot shave I’d love to hear/ read them.

Hello everyone.

I’m just chilling at NRGH for a follow-up X-ray for my back.

You are probably not wondering at all why Casey is waiting for a follow-up X-ray on his back, or why does he look so feral … but I’ll tell you anyway.

This is actually day 9 of the saga. On July 12ty I fell from a ladder and fractured 3 vertebrae: T12, L1, and L2. But not critically. The emerg docs consulted neurosurgery in Victoria and neuro was happy with how things were sitting so no surgical or bracing interventions needed. Just rest and pain meds for the near future.

It has been an adventure. From giving the poor student paramedic tips on assessment, to seeing an emerg doc whom I’ve known for years - and who is an absolute gem - to being helped by one of my retired rugby players who is now an emerg nurse, to my wife scoring all the home equipment I could need, to managing my own acute care mobilization at home.

It will be a short a recovery considering what it could have been.

I started with a two wheeled walker because I could not put all my weight through my back; I was able to ditch that a few days ago. I’ll hereby call that walker Wilbur.

I can stand or sit for about 1.5 min before everything starts to clench and get hot; however, it improves a bit every day.

My favourite piece of gear is the bed rail that I can grab to help roll, reposition, and get up.

And I’m not able to stand long enough yet to shave my face - hence the feral looking Papa Smurf white beard. I’m using that as my motivation to push my tolerance every day so I can shave it off. I don’t know how people tolerate beards. It is sooooooo itchy!!!

More adventures to come.

Always a great activity for kids to learn motor skills and play.
