I wish more people knew this.

Most of the people who reach out to me don't look like they're struggling.

They have jobs.
They take care of their families.
People describe them as dependable, calm, and "the strong one."

Then they sit down and say something like,

"I don't even know why I'm here... I just know I can't keep doing this."

That sentence sticks with me.

You don't have to wait until your life falls apart before you ask for help.

You don't need a diagnosis.
You don't need a crisis.
You don't need to convince yourself that someone else has it worse.

If you're carrying something heavy, that's enough.

Counselling isn't about fixing broken people.

It's about giving yourself the same care and attention you've probably spent years giving everyone else.

If this resonates with you, my door is open to you.

Take care of yourself. You matter too.

Many of my clients wrestle with staying present.

When life feels overwhelming, whether because of anxiety, loss, conflict, health concerns, or major life changes, it can become difficult to think clearly. The mind starts racing, emotions become intense, and even simple tasks can feel exhausting.

One thing I often explain is the difference between anxiety and crisis.

Anxiety is usually our body's response to a perceived future threat. It often shows up as worry, overthinking, worst-case-scenario thinking, tension, restlessness, or feeling unable to shut our minds off.

A crisis is different. A crisis is an event or situation that overwhelms our normal ability to cope. It can affect us physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and relationally.

The challenge is that both can feel very similar. Both can cause racing thoughts, physical symptoms, emotional distress, sleep disruption, and a feeling that life is out of control.

When someone is in crisis, stabilization becomes the priority. Bringing structure, support, and a sense of normalcy can help create enough stability for healing to begin.

One simple tool you can use right now is called the Orienting Reflex.

Slowly look around and notice something that is:
• Up
• Down
• Near
• Far

This helps remind your nervous system that you are here, in the present moment, and not in the imagined future.

Seeking support and processing difficult events can also help regulate both the mind and body. We were never meant to carry every burden alone.

Worry and panic often steal our peace. The mind was never designed to carry tomorrow's burdens while living through today's challenges.

Many hearts in our community are heavy after the tragic loss of a young person this week.

In a small town, these events touch all of us in one way or another. Whether you knew the individual personally, know the family, responded to the incident, have children of your own, or are simply struggling with what happened, please know that whatever you're feeling is okay.

Grief, sadness, confusion, anger, numbness, fear, and even not knowing what to feel are all normal responses to a difficult situation.

Please check in on one another over the coming days. Reach out to friends, family members, coworkers, neighbours, and especially young people who may be having a harder time than they may present.

If you are struggling, please don't carry it alone.

Immediate support available:

• Kids Help Line: 1-800-668-6868 or text 686868
• 9-8-8 Su***de Crisis Helpline (Call or Text 988)

• BC Crisis Centre: (1-800-784-2433)
• KUU-US Crisis Line: 1-800-588-8717

You do not need to be in crisis to ask for help.

Grief is one of those things that doesn’t follow rules.

You might’ve heard of the “7 stages of grief” denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance.

But honestly, it is not that straight forward or linear.

Some days you might feel okay.
Then the next day, it hits you all over again.

Sometimes you move forward, sometimes it feels like you’ve gone backwards.

That’s not failure, that’s actually part of the process.

Grief moves in waves, not steps.

One of the most important things early on isn’t “figuring it all out” it’s stabilizing.
When everything feels shaken, the goal becomes simple:

Getting through the day
Creating small pockets of normal
Giving your mind and body something steady to hold onto

You’re adjusting to a completely new reality… and that takes time.

If you’re in it right now, try not to rush yourself.
Slow it down. Notice what’s actually coming up.

Some days it might be sadness.
Other days anger.
Other days… nothing at all.

All of that is allowed.

You don’t need to force healing..

If this resonates, I wanted to share something practical and free to help guide you through this, I’d genuinely recommend checking out MyGrief.ca.

It is a Canadian resource you can review at your own pace. These modules include loss of partner, child, trauma, or just trying to make sense of how you feel.

If you’d rather talk to a real person, you can reach out to myself or for immediate crisis the British Columbia Bereavement Helpline is also free and connects you with someone who will simply listen and help you find support.

For the reader that feels overwhelmed right now, you are not alone and this is not supposed to be easy - you are not doing it wrong.

Why You’re Not Lazy

What people are avoiding is typically where the work is.

Sometimes what we’re avoiding isn’t even the issue itself…

it’s the pattern of not initiating - the executive functioning side of things.

Have you found yourself avoiding certain situations, procrastinating, or stuck in a loop of waiting until the last minute to start or complete something?

If this pattern feels familiar, there is good news.

There are tools that can interrupt these patterns of behaviour.

Some evidence-based ones include:

Limiting screen time before bed and first thing in the morning;

This reduces artificial dopamine spikes that come from things like social media, which can make normal tasks feel harder to start.

Creating structure;

Anxiety, worry, and lack of direction often grow in unstructured environments.

Avoidance tends to thrive in that space as well.

Starting your day by completing a simple task- dishes, making your bed, a small chore.

Research supports that early task completion increases the likelihood of continued task engagement throughout the day.

These small shifts begin to interrupt autopilot patterns and replace them with ones that are more aligned and productive, rather than maladaptive.

If you took something from this, share it with someone who might need it.

I’ll continue putting out content like this; practical, grounded, and usable.

Supporting mental health throughout Vancouver Island and British Columbia.

Sometimes days feel heavier than they should.

It’s not always loud.
Sometimes it’s quiet… a lingering sense that something is missing.
A pull toward “simpler times,” or moments that felt clearer, lighter, more certain.

We often think relief comes from going back.
But more often, it comes from learning how to see differently…
to understand where we are, and what it means to move forward from here.

I’ve been seeing more people come in carrying this weight, a loss of direction, a fading sense of purpose, or a quiet question:

What is my life actually about?

I offer a space for people who are asking:

• What is my life about?
• Why do I feel disconnected from purpose?
• How do I move forward when life feels unclear or uncertain?

Using values-based approaches, this session is designed to help you slow down, reflect, and begin clarifying what actually matters to you.

This isn’t about giving you answers.
It’s about helping you find clarity,
and identifying a direction that feels grounded, intentional, and real. Supporting you to discover your own answers.

Available conveniently at two locations.

You’re holding it together… but it’s heavy.

Mind doesn’t shut off.

You feel stuck, off track, or just tired of carrying it alone.

Clients often comment on feeling more clarity, lighter, and even eager or motivated.

We slow things down, make sense of what’s going on,
and get you moving forward again, practically.

Some people come to counselling because they feel a deep sense of a lack of purpose, loss of meaning, or uncertainty about life direction.

I am offering a specialized consultation for Meaning & Existential Distress.

Designed for individuals wrestling with questions such as:

• What is my life about?
• Why do I feel lost or disconnected from purpose?
• How do I move forward when life no longer feels meaningful?

Drawing from existential and values-based counselling approaches, this consultation provides space to thoughtfully explore questions of purpose, personal values, and life direction.

The goal is not to prescribe meaning, but to help individuals clarify what matters most to them and identify pathways toward a more intentional life.

My personal faith tradition is Christianity. For clients who desire it, faith and spiritual questions can be integrated into the conversation. However, this service is first and foremost a respectful space for each client’s own exploration of meaning, worldview, and life direction.

Available conviently at two locations.
