Your horse wants to trust you.

They want to take the route of least resistance and do what you’re asking of them (barring any pain response or big fear). They want to be at ease in their work. They want to enjoy their time with you. They want to be at peace in their life. They want a connection with their human.

Sometimes that connection looks like doing a job well and being done. Sometimes it looks like cuddles and hanging out. Sometimes it’s somewhere in between.Cat food

Theres no fancy trick to this, just show up as someone they can trust.

If you’re curious what trust looks like from your horse’s side, that’s exactly what a session is for.

There are 3 main thing horses bring up when ironing out wrinkles in the bond with you:

Clarity — Is the message you’re giving them clear? Do they know what’s expected of them? Are you making those messages and expectations as simple as possible? When the message gets confusing or expectations start to vary, the horse will start to feel like you don’t know what you want, or like they can’t understand you.

Confidence — Do you feel like you know what you’re doing? Or are you conveying uncertainty with each request and interaction? Learning is great, as long as you adjust as you learn. Trying new things is great, as long as you stay a student of the horse. Confidence doesn’t have to be loud, and it doesn’t have to be a show of strength, and it doesn’t have to mean knowing everything. But it does come from a self-trust that you can learn and adjust as you go.

Consistency — Do you ask for the same things the same way? Is your horse able to predict how you’ll respond to or request something? When consistency is weak, the horse can tune you out, because the way you ask for something keeps changing.

Not every horse asks for all 3, and some don’t ask for any of these specifically. These are just the most common areas that come up, and most horses land on one. Some horses genuinely don’t need confidence from you; they’re the ones who build it in a nervous rider instead. Some don’t need perfect consistency; they’re patient teachers who fill in the gaps themselves. If you’re newer to riding and still finding your confidence, that doesn’t mean your horse is struggling because of it. Plenty of horses aren’t looking for that at all. There are many other things that support a bond, and many other pieces to a happy horse. This is one lens, not the whole picture.

Not sure which one your horse would name? That’s exactly what a horse communication session is for. Booking is available through the bio links.

We’re in show season, which means warm-up ring season too. Every horse has individual needs, but a few reasons behind warm-up ring issues come up again and again. Want to know exactly what would help your horse? Ask them directly, in a communication session.

Thousands of conversations with horses and not once haven’t heard this one.

Are there things about or in your horse’s environment that need tending to? Likely. Likely they would have a request for some schedule or set up to change. But reluctance to move forward and resistance to work has a different root cause.

If your horse is suffering from resistance, grumpiness, reluctance to ridden work please don’t think first that it’s too much turn out. Look at all the components.

Or better yet ask them.

Here’s what horses talk about when asked if they’re happy.
1. The 3 Fs: friends, forage, freedom — they can touch and interact with other horses, they have access to grazing or hay around the clock, they have room to move outside and explore
2. Exercise: the right discipline (h/j, dressage, etc.), the right amount, the right variety, the right praise, the right training, the right challenge, the right play, the right amount of time off
3. Tack: if it fits, if it’s helpful, if it’s used correctly
4. Nutrition: the right amount and quality of food, plus the right timing of meals and supplements
5. Security: a place to relax where they feel safe enough to sleep well and comfortably, and trust that the humans around them will keep them safe
6. Nervous system: whether they have the tools to relax and regulate themselves
7. Environment: whether they can find real peace, and whether the balance of time inside and outside is right for them
8. Professional care: access to, and correct timing of, necessary care (dental, farrier/trim, bodywork, training, vet, etc.)
9. Human interaction: partnership fit, trainer fit, stable hand fit
10. Herd: dynamics, friendships, compatibility and belonging
If your horse is showing signs of stress, depression, shutting down, or resistance, go through this list. Talk to your trainer, veterinarian, and other horse professionals in your life. Read books, listen to podcasts, and follow horse professionals you trust on social media. Most of all, listen to your gut. You know your horse. And if you’d like to hear directly from them, a communication session is one way to do that

The first 5 minutes of a session, I’m not just listening to their introduction, I’m reading everything I can about them. How your horse describes shows up tells me how they want to be seen, and it’s more than their own descriptive words (i.e. “I’m pretty” or I’m sweet”). It includes:

* How quickly they show up
* How clear the connection is
* How distracted they are
* How detailed they are
* What they notice, in themselves and in their environment
* What they want to talk about first
* Whether they can express their own desires
* How they see themselves within the herd
* The way they greet me
* Their delivery, cadence, and tone

I’m offering your horse a chance to feel fully seen, and you an opportunity to dive as deeply as you’d like with your horse.
