May is Speech Language Hearing month, and it’s a friendly remind to us all that:

🌼 Communication in all of its forms are valid
🌼 Early intervention is key
🌼 Every individual - regardless of age, ability, gender, race, or background - deserves access to supports

Pairing books with visuals or physical manipulatives can support a child’s understanding and make early literacy more meaningful.

We think they meant puppets + toys, but this should work too 😉

While we work hard to do our best for our Autistic children and families year round, this month is a great opportunity to inspire and challenge ourselves and others to learn more and practice better.

This month at The Core we learned together from an Autistic SLP about SLP practice from a neurodivergent lens and about workplace accommodations.

It was SUCH an insightful conversation. Consulting an Autistic parent, SLP, OT, or advocate is a small way to bring more perspective into the conversation. We learned so much.

Small steps make for huge changes over time. Know better, do better 🤍

Trauma-Informed Care by

is a second year Speech Language Pathology graduate student at Gannon University. Her research centres on the impact of trauma and adverse childhood experiences on communication and social-emotional regulation. She has a specific focus on bringing trauma-informed care education to SLP graduate programs.

Using these principles, (and being sure to connect with registered mental health professionals that know the child’s profile best), we can do our best to promote safe, supportive, and empowering therapeutic environments. 🧠💕
