A small mouse senses a cat.
Before it has time to think, its heart races, its body prepares and it runs.
It does not choose flight.
Its nervous system moves into protection.
But when there is nowhere left to run, the mouse becomes still. It may freeze, go limp, or play dead.
This is not weakness.
It is not failure.
It is not a conscious choice.
Our nervous systems can respond in similar ways. We may become anxious, angry, restless, or desperate to escape. Or we may feel numb, disconnected, exhausted, frozen, or unable to move.
These are protective responses shaped by what our bodies have learned about survival.
Healing is not about forcing ourselves to move faster or “get over it.”
Healing begins with safety, connection and curiosity.
What is happening inside me right now?
What might my nervous system be trying to protect me from?
What would help me feel a little safer or more supported?
The goal is not to get rid of our protective responses.
The goal is to help our nervous systems experience more safety, flexibility, connection and choice.
