My previous post looked at what survival mode looks like.

Today’s infographic, also from an unknown/uncredited source, shows some ways to get out of survival mode.

Which one of these have you used and found it helpful? Which one would you like to use more often?

The one that is hard for me to do when stressed but works well is reclaiming my voice. The one that I would like to do more of is to stop doing everything at once, pick one thing and let the rest breathe.

Good stress (eustress) helps us grow, achieve goals, build resiliency, and overcome challenging life situations. We can seek out eustress by setting goals, taking small steps towards learning new things, and pursuing challenging work-related, exercise-related, and new learning-related opportunities.

Bad stress (distress) feels like too much stress and that we do not not enough competency or resources to face all of it. Distress can lead to overwhelm, panic, and burnout.

Thank you to Whole Hearted School Counselling for this clear and attractive infographic.

Mental health professionals are at high risk of occupational stress and burnout. Speaking from my own experience, providing therapy can be very stressful due to the constant exposure to clients’ trauma, compassion fatigue, and feeling emotionally overwhelmed, just to name a few.

I find that practicing the strategies and suggestions that we provide to our clients, including self-care, is imperative. This includes, maintaining a healthy sleep and exercise routine, engaging in social supports, and seeking our own therapy, just to name a few.

This infographic by , displays some healthy affirmations that can help us practice self-compassion, keep focused on our values, and remind ourselves of our purpose.

Accusing communication is a confrontational, “I win, you lose” approach. For receivers, it can easily be taken as an attack. It does not involve owning and sharing feelings with another. In relationships, accusing communication can lead to escalated and unresolved conflicts.

Assertive communication is an “I win, you win” approach. It involves expressing your feelings, concerns, and needs, paving the way for shared decision-making and boundary-setting. The goals are mutual understanding and trying to compromise. In relationships, assertive communication leads to increased feelings of self-esteem and respect within individual partners and increased vulnerability, responsibility sharing, and intimacy within couples.

This infographic, by Whole Hearted School Counselling, shows some of the spoken differences between these two styles of communication.

Like routinely taking care of your vehicle, your relationship with your significant other requires regular maintenance. If not, the vital parts begin to lose their function and the whole thing eventually breaks down.

This infographic by shows different ways that couples can become more and more disconnected, feel like roommates, and build resentment, which can lead to unhealthy relationship patterns and eventual break up/separation/divorce.

If you are concerned that your relationship is showing some of these effects, talk about your observations and discuss potential strategies to address them.

Seeing a couples counsellor, either by yourself or with your partner, can help a great deal with getting your relationship back on track.
