Dr. Ryan Nakama ND

Dr. Ryan Nakama ND Dr. Ryan Nakama ND helps to reconnect people with their health. With a special interest in digestiv For most of his life he dreamt of the NHL.

Dr. Ryan Nakama is passionate about re-connecting people with their health, allowing them to achieve their goals and realize the freedom to live the life they have always wanted - whether that be beating their best time, climbing a mountain or keeping up with their grandkids. He works with athletes of all types to optimize performance and overcome injuries, with men to improve productivity, reduce

sick time and understand any male specific health issues that they may face, as well as anyone else dealing with pain, or other obstacles to health in order to obtain, maintain, or regain the the life they want to live. Health has always been important to Ryan (or Dr. Nakama) and his family. As a child, while all the other kids were eating sugar coated cereal, he had bran flakes. While they had video games, he had a stick, a ball, and a big green field. And while he may have cursed his parents a few times, he thanks them now for instilling a healthy attitude and love of the outdoors. Now, as a father himself he lovingly awaits the inevitable backlash from his own daughter as he tries to instill the same important values. Born and raised in Southern Alberta, he left for the West Coast only to return following the birth of his daughter. Family, friends and community had suddenly become much higher priorities. He is now proud to call Calgary home; to share in its vibrant communities and neighborhoods, and excited to explore it’s beautiful natural surroundings. It would be a lie to say that he always wanted to become a doctor. But when the big leagues didn’t call he shifted focus and traded in the skates for hiking boots, a snowboard, and a bike. Dr. Nakama believes that health is much more than just the absence of disease. It is what enables us to follow our dreams, live the life we desire, and enjoy what matters most. Healthy, active, and passionate people are the foundation of a strong community and serve as role models for the people around them. Dr. Nakama is dedicated to helping to build these communities through their people.

Summer Burnout, “Weekend Warriors,” and Injury Flare-Ups: What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You

Summer often comes with a shift in routine—longer days, more social events, travel, sports, yard work, and outdoor activities that didn’t exist in the same way during the rest of the year. While this can feel energizing, it also creates a very common pattern seen in clinic: summer burnout combined with sudden injuries from “weekend warrior” activity. These two issues often overlap more than people realize....

Just pushing through it, isn't a great strategy to help the body heal. Even when it seems to work for a while, there's a limit to how long one can push it.

It's ok, and sometimes outright necessary to get a little help to ensure the proper nutrients and conditions for healing and repair.

What Is Prolotherapy? A Natural Approach to Chronic Pain Relief

If you've been dealing with chronic pain, you may have tried rest, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage, medications, or even steroid injections—only to find that the pain keeps coming back. For many people, the problem isn't that the injury never healed; it's that it never healed completely. In some cases, lingering pain is caused by weakened ligaments or tendons that no longer provide the stability your joints need....

Perimenopause Symptoms Nobody Talks About

Perimenopause Symptoms Nobody Talks About When most people think about perimenopause, they think of hot flashes and irregular periods. While those are certainly common, they only tell part of the story. Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, and it can begin in your late 30s or 40s—sometimes even earlier. During this time, estrogen and progesterone don't simply decline; they fluctuate unpredictably....

Why IBS Symptoms Keep Coming Back: Common Reasons and How to Stop the Cycle

Why IBS Symptoms Keep Coming Back If you have IBS, you may know the frustrating cycle: symptoms improve, you feel better, and then suddenly the bloating, abdominal pain, or bowel changes return. This can make it feel like you are constantly starting over. But recurring IBS symptoms do not mean you are failing. 🚫 IBS isn't a diagnosis that tells us what's wrong—it's a label for a group of digestive symptoms.

That's why two people with "IBS" can need completely different treatment plans.

Some of the common root contributors include:
• SIBO or gut dysbiosis
• Food intolerances
• Stress and the gut-brain axis
• Poor digestive function
• Constipation or slow motility
• Inflammation
• Pelvic floor dysfunction
• Bile acid issues after gallbladder removal

When treatment is based on guessing instead of identifying what's driving your symptoms, it's easy to feel like "nothing works."

The right treatment starts with asking better questions—not just prescribing another supplement
