Language Is More Than Just Talking!

🗣️ Could Your Child Have Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?

Did you know that approximately 1 in 14 children has Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?

DLD affects a child’s ability to understand and/or use language. It can impact learning, friendships, behaviour, and everyday communication.

🔎 Signs to Watch For:

✅ Difficulty following directions or understanding questions
✅ Trouble finding the right words or explaining thoughts
✅ Difficulty telling stories or describing events
✅ Challenges learning new vocabulary or understanding concepts
✅ Difficulty remembering or processing verbal information
✅ Struggles with reading comprehension or written language
✅ Difficulty participating in conversations or understanding social situations
✅ Frustration, withdrawal, or behaviours related to communication challenges

💡 Did you know? Children with DLD may speak in full sentences and appear to communicate well, yet still struggle to understand or use more complex language.

DLD is sometimes mistaken for ADHD, learning difficulties, or behavioural challenges.

❤️ Early identification makes a difference! If you have concerns about your child’s language development, a Speech-Language Pathologist can help identify their strengths, challenges, and support needs.

1 in 14 people, roughly 2.6 million Canadians, live with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD): a persistent difficulty using and/or understanding language. Its challenges are lifelong, affect people of all ages, and it is often overlooked. Speech-language pathologists play a key role in supporting people with DLD throughout their lives.

DLD Awareness Day is coordinated by Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (RADLD), advocating for recognition and support worldwide.
