In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), anxiety is seen as a disturbance of the Shen (the mind-spirit housed in the Heart) often showing up as restlessness, poor sleep (insomnia), anxiety, or tension. Meditation helps nourish Heart-Yin (the cooling, restorative aspect of the heart), anchor the Shen, and regulate Qi (energy) flow, helping us feel more grounded, centered, and connected. 🩵🌀

From a biomedical perspective, meditation supports the nervous system by calming the amygdala, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, and improving mood regulating chemicals like serotonin to support emotional regulation over time.

Qigong is a TCM meditative practice that means “breath cultivation”. It combines movement, breath, and focused awareness to promote circulation of Qi, blood, and lymph, helping clear stagnation, which is seen as the root of pain and disease in TCM. Regular practice supports physical and emotional well-being by improving body awareness, calming the nervous system, lowering cortisol, and reducing anxiety. It encourages a shift out of fight-or-flight into a state that supports healing. Research suggests Qigong can help reduce stress-related conditions like anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Research in women with PCOS found that after 12 weeks of regular Qigong practice, nearly 90% experienced improvements in menstrual irregularities, including cycle length, flow, and duration compared to very minimal changes in the control group. PMCID: PMC8149243

Meditation in any form is an embodied practice that helps restore internal balance and build resilience to stress over time by calming both the nervous system and the “mind-spirit” in TCM terms. 🧘‍♀️🕊️

Meditation is the practice of focused, present-moment awareness, often through the breath, senses, or a specific point of focus. It works through the nervous and endocrine systems to support brain function and emotional regulation.

A lot of us live in a high stress environment and when cortisol stays high for too long it starts to negatively affect key brain areas:

- The amygdala becomes more reactive, making you more sensitive to fear and stress.
- The prefrontal cortex, which helps with decision-making and emotional regulation, becomes less effective.
- The hippocampus, which is important for memory and learning, can shrink or function less efficiently.

As a result, long-term stress can lead to things like worse memory and focus, more anxiety and emotional reactivity, and difficulty regulating stress responses. 🧠

Two of the best ways to help reverse or reduce stress effects on the brain are exercise & meditation. These practices help lower cortisol levels and support brain recovery, especially in the hippocampus.
